|
|
I went to a garage sale by my home today and found a couple of vw parts. An orig wire cover and an accy e brake handle cover. The person selling the parts said his father took them off a 57 beetle that he bought new but was involved in a crash 30 years ago. Car was totaled and all good parts were taken off and stored. The son was cleaning out garage and came across these items and was selling them. My question is, is this a wire cover for an oval window. I believe they were used from 56-59 beetle but I am not sure. Any one out there know if this true.
Thanks,
Ruben

I kinda think it is. 20 years ago, I had one just like this that I purchased from the late Bob Scott at Vintage Parts. I paid $150 for it but it was Nos. I'm glad I walked by this sale today, as the person was going to throw away anything that did not sell. I have no car for it, so probably will sell it. |

That is a later ('58?-'65) wiring cover. Original oval wiring covers only had two of the rubber strips stapled to the top. _________________ Thanks,

That is the later '58> version.
The oval one has a notch cut out the tip for the wiper motor mount. |

Its not for a 59/59, if it was it would be grey in color, and would only have the two rubber strips stapled at the top. Must be for a 60, or 61 and up. _________________ WANTED: Henry Veale Santa Rosa plate frames

Talking to a couple of knowledgeable people, they believe its correct for a 60-65 beetle The oval one has a cut out at top for wiper motor and should be gray and have to rubber strips according to them. Thanks, to all who helped try to identify cover.

I got an item that should not raise too much ire if reproduced- the cardboard wire covers for early Beetles. |
do you have the '56-'60 style? those are so super rare. it is the most commonly missing part on restored beetles of that era. like over 95% either don't have it or have the wrong style. most people don't even know what they look like. |
Do tell professor, do tell.... |
the early ones are medium grey in color.
the later ones which are darker grey/black.
the early ones have very sharply formed corners
the later ones have a simpler pressing.
the early ones have a dry paper material.
the much later ones have a waxy paper material (like late '60s ish)
I will get some pics of mine later and show a side by side comparison. I think that it would be relatively easy to reproduce. at least by the standards of what it takes to reproduce parts. |

here are some comparison pics on the dash backs. I pulled one early one out of a '56 many years back. I pulled this one out of an early '60 beetle. I don't know how much later the early style was used.
can anyone think of a restored or original late oval which has the correct style of dash back?
if someone is serious about reproducing this, and has the skillz, contact me. I might be willing to loan mine out to someone who can get it done.
these dash backs don't fit in easily, and they are very fragile, which is probably why so few still exist today. also, they don't fit flush with the cowl.
