Hi guys, I need your opinion: I'm not sure if I should replace this CV joint - look at the marks - normal or wear? they are still the original from 1982 - minimum 180k miles

I'd replace them. The galling looks like the balls wore through the hardened portion of the steel and they're now into the softer metal.
In a pinch you could re-install them by swapping the left and right cv joints so that the force goes in the opposite direction, but those are worn out and should be replaced. |

| junk. Replace it with a good brand, a new complete chineese axle might be cheaper but best to keep as many German parts in your Vanagon. |

My two inner cv's were the same. They were not giving me any signs they were wearing out but I replaced them with new Lobro units because I did not want to have to think about them when I was 5000 miles away from home. My old ones are now puzzles in my office...so next time I service those things it should be a piece of cake reassembling them
