Hi guys, I need your opinion: I'm not sure if I should replace this CV joint - look at the marks - normal or wear? they are still the original from 1982 - minimum 180k miles

yes
it's worn, old, and you have it out, so replace it (lobro)

I'd replace them. The galling looks like the balls wore through the hardened portion of the steel and they're now into the softer metal.
In a pinch you could re-install them by swapping the left and right cv joints so that the force goes in the opposite direction, but those are worn out and should be replaced. |

| junk. Replace it with a good brand, a new complete chineese axle might be cheaper but best to keep as many German parts in your Vanagon. |

My two inner cv's were the same. They were not giving me any signs they were wearing out but I replaced them with new Lobro units because I did not want to have to think about them when I was 5000 miles away from home. My old ones are now puzzles in my office...so next time I service those things it should be a piece of cake reassembling them _________________ '84 Westy - 2.2wbx, GT Torque-Biasing Differential
