one other thing distracted me:
can you spot the bus?
its a 65ish panel that is buried completely by metal junk. apart from the cutout louvers and the metal pipe across the roof it seems to be in rather good shape. its under a shed full of firewood. problem is there are lots of real big pipes (like three feet in diameter) and old truck axles blocking the acess. i talked to the owner of the junkjard yesterday (a mom and pop enterprise). hardest part will be to get him to dig it out with his caterpillar and not damage it
as they say: they are out there! _________________ 61 panel: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=465022

i dont think i will keep the second panel, but first i got to dig it out and see how its condition is.
while doing the watersupply in my garage and waiting for the copper pipes i brazed to cool down i started to snip around at the front end of the 61, around the windshield. the frame needs complete replacement

the center post isnt even welded to the dash when you remove the outsinde frame!
i have to be careful to not cut off to many things before sandblasting, so the front part keeps aligned (very important for the fitment of the doors - ask me how i know). i think of repairing the frame in advance.

no more work done on the 61 because i got distracted and dug a little deeper around the other panel. looks to be a 67 (forgot to look at the radio cutout to be absolutely sure)
i agreed on a price with pop including lifting the rear junk with his caterpillar off the roof
the brown stuff on the roof is dirt, not rust, it seems pretty solid sheet metal wise on the painted surfaces - it HAS paint contrary to the 61. some bubbles on the raingutter, but thats it. front mask and lower sides are through, but hey - this isn´t arizona
pop wont let me cut a hole in his (metal) fence to get it out, but i have a connection to a friend that knows somebody with a crane to lift it over the (ten feet high) fence
lots of "acessories" lying around:
stay tuned _________________ 61 panel: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=465022

Top work there, karl.
Much as I do tons of driving you are one of those people putting Split after Split back on the road whole and beautiful.
Without people like you the scene would slowly slip away. _________________ Cheers & God Bless

thanx andy, i always try do do cars very few people would do and think a lot befor cutting up any vw
but sometimes you just cant do without donor parts. like with the roof: it is rusted through not only in the rear corner (that wouldnt be so bad), but the part where the piano hinge for the rear hatch attaches to is compeltely crusty, i had to drill out all bolts. so i got a donor section from a 58
