PostPosted: Tue May 24, 2011 2:41 pm    Post subject: Going for the WWII North Africa look Reply with quote

I have a '73, stock, yellow, great shape. I want to dress it up to resemble the WWII look. Basically all I can think of off hand is to paint it North Africa desert camo, and mount the spare on the hood.

Does anybody have any ideas/suggestions?

Has anybody done this and have pictures?

Many thanks!

Sell your stock 181 and buy a kitcar from Kooblekar?

Just curious as to what motivates a person to do this. The car is quite different than the WW2 version.

Yeah I like that one too, although not the wheels. But hey each to their own look!

It has something, I don't know what, mounted to the driver's front fender. Looks like an air filter.

Two five gallon gas cans on the back is a great idea and costs less than one hundred dollars to accomplish, so that's a good feature.

A brush guard on the front bumper is another, and that is a tad over one hundred so it's another good detail for cheap.

That looks like what is supposed to be a Notek military blackout light. I think the original Notek has a slightly different (thinner) shape to it (?). They were used on Kubelwagens and other German military vehicles during WWII. Military 181s in Europe had them on the front and back I believe.

That is an interesting mix of war-era parts, much later 181 NATO camoflauge (colors are a little off), and modern trends.

Obviously, it is your Thing, but I would advise against going this route if it really is in great shape. On the other hand, if it needs paint, go for it. That is what I did to mine. I'm starting to miss the yellow, so it'll definitely see a real paint job some time in the near future.

You might be surprised at the price of "real" (steel) jerry cans.. Thanks to a set of wonderful new environmental requirements, steel cans might as well be made of gold.

Not much war-era parts on that car... except for that shovel maybe. The rest is a bunch of crap. Very Happy

But it does what is was made for: to fool people. Cool

It is not an original Notek. It looks to be made from an upper part from an aftermarket airfilter?

Military 181 had also blackoutlights in front (2x) and back (2x blackout, 1x license plate light), but not such a large Notek. Those on the 181 were Hellas.

These parts are still available and could be handy if you to make a realistic military car.

Hi Kevfra.....

One of the PO's of my car did what you want, althought with some signifigant body work to change the shape of the car. At one time, it had a coat of AK tan, but right now, it's OD. Here's a shot of the spare tire

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

He just bolted a mount from another model VW right on the hood, and put some longer bolts to hold the wheel. I'm going to replace that with a "tower" from KoobleKars.

The original style "Notek" blackout headlights, and also the WW2 style tail lights, are for sale on E-Bay.de, I bought a control switch there for my Notek, and it was shipped promptly. I also just picked up the German "owner's manual" to go with the light from: http://ferromil.net/Ger-Uniforms-Accesoires/Notek-...40ff66f137 It's very interesting, and includes a parts list....of course, the parts prices are a little out-of-date Laughing

Have fun with your car.....that's what they are for Very Happy

BNMike

Mines a work in progress.. not trying to fool anyone, just needed something better than dark metallic blue. It's a free-hand adaptation of a WWII Luftwaffe pattern. To facilitate 'the look' I shaved some nipple hubcaps, and painted them to match. Apologies for the crap pic.

I dig the look. Would it be wrong of me to paint mine? Think Wink

That's a really hard decision.

My first Thing had sort of an eastern front aviation winter camo theme.
