|
|
OK, I`m finally going to start a thread. After nearly 27 years and MANY VW`s I have my first Baywindow. Recently I sold my 66 Bug I found myself with no transportation. My 65 Panel is too far off so I bought this 1968 Roadrunner Camper from some friends of mine. It had been sitting since 1981 when they found it. It was fitted with a 356 motor but they had sold that and the remains needed some TLC. Still in original paint (L87) but really dirty inside and out. I have been working on it and will be posting more soon but here is my starting point. Plans are lots of cleaning, a 1600 with 36 Dells, complete brake job, take the spare off and fix the dents from it and on the rear corners, fix some front floor rust and spot in the paint. I will most likely lower it too. And maybe the EMPI fives I have in the garage. Will have to change pretty much every piece of window rubber and a Berg shifter.

Sounds cool. So how much money do you plan to invest in it? _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

Paid $1500 for it but will probably have around $4000 into it. More if it gets the Wagens West treatment. _________________ If you`re going to do something, do it right. |

First thing on the list was a complete brake job so.... off with the belly pan only to find 30 years of cobwebs.
Here`s what was in the pan.
Yuck. A trip to the powder coaters was in order for the pan. Got a new MC on here and after a failed attempt at buying a "Good" upper res. I just bought a new later style which I still have to figure out a good way to mount. But I got all the brakes at the wheels done.
The inner fenderwells are all in perfect condition so they will just need a cleanup.
Had the tank cleaned out powder coated along with the filler and vent tube.
I got a recent rebuilt 1600 from a friend so scrounged some tin for it and had that powder coated too.
Restored a set of 36 Dellortos so with those and a CB Performance exhaust and a German 009 hopefuuly it will get me down the road at a decent rate of speed. I have a later trans I may have rebuilt if the original one in it proves to be bad. Will also replace the CV axles and rear bearings later too. I want to drive it first.

If you`re going to do something, do it right.
And you did. Fantastic job. You must own stock in that powder coating business. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

Been awhile since I posted so here`s what`s been going on. I got the motor in and running. For some reason letely when I run Dells on a 1600 I have to run them on the rich side to get rid of the flat spot so I still have tuning to do. And still have to install air cleaners and heater hoses.
Got the cab pretty much cleaned up. Still have some more to do on the dash and the seats will need redoing. Oh, I just got some nice vents too.
Battery tray is totally solid just ugly. I may respray it when the corners and nose get done.
And got the paint compounded, polished and waxed. All but the nose and rears corners which are getting bodywork and touchup. I hate nose mounted spare tires!
I picked up the bumpers from powder coat today and will hopefully get the dented up nose and rear corners done and maybe the front floor too. After that I will start on all the window rubber. (Its petrified from sitting out for 30 years). Then either a full lowering job or stock height and powder coated wheels. _________________ If you`re going to do something, do it right. |

I will start on all the window rubber.

check the transistion holes on the carb(s) to see if the butterfly is adjusted so they are above it or coevered when the butterfly is closed. If the butterfly is too open or the transisition holes are exposed then the wells may be too dry to give you a fuel boost when you crack the throttle. You need both the transisition holes and accelerator pump for enrichment to work to avoid that flat spot. Another cause can be sticky weights or advance mechanism in the distributor. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Acc. pumps are fine and I`ve tried a few different distributors so it`s not that. Also tried a set of 40`s instead of the 36`s but I still have to run 165 mains to get it to run right. _________________ If you`re going to do something, do it right. |

Got the bumpers back from powder coat and assembled. But before I put them on the Bus is getting a nosejob and buttlift to fix some damage.

Great looking Bus, looks like you are doing a methodical job bring it back to its former glory!!
But it also looks like you left the flaps and thermostat off? At a minimum a bus should always have the flaps to direct the air where it is supposed to go when the engine is running its hottest… freeway or going up hills…
Not having the Thermostat will reduce the life of your P&C’s as well as cause the heads to get loose after repeated extreme thermal expansion differences between the heads and cylinders… (The Thermostat is designed to put more air to the heads when warming up as the thermostat starts to open…) _________________ Current VWs 71 T2 Westy SO-72/6(Miami), 71 Crew Cab, 2015 GSW TDI

Thanks everyone. And for the record. I`ve never used the thrmostat and flaps on any of my VW`s (Over 20) and never had a problem. I`ve used a 36 hp type shroud on many of them so it wasn`t possible. Never had any overheating problems. _________________ If you`re going to do something, do it right. |
