OK maybe a dumb question, but when changing an oil filter, do the holes on the filter have to be exactly like the filter being replaced? I have on that is supposed to work but the one coming off has just four and the new one has more. |

No Bosch oil lifters please.
Stay with the Mahle/Mann or WIX /NAPA Gold. Far better quality. |

I use Volkswagen oil filters. The adapter on my air cooled engine uses the same filter as a New Beetle gas engine. _________________ *ASE Recertified Master Automotive Tech*

Filters don't always look the same. For my Fox, Mann are the heaviest I've had, and the openings look different from Purolator, etc. The main thing is having it fit properly.
This is probably a question for your parts provider. |

Four points to consider when selecting spin-on oil filter for fit...
Size of center threaded hole. This is the attachment point as well as part of the inlet/outlet system.
The diameter of the O-ring. This is the outer seal and needs to mate with the flat sealing surface. Get this wrong and it will leak.
Whether there is an internal by-pass valve to prevent over pressure when filter is dirty (not for high oil pressures from the pump).
Physical size of the filter housing. Big is good as it usually means more filter surface area so it can last longer. Too big, and it won't fit into the space available for the filter.
Most filter adapters seem to use a Ford style PH-8A mounting. Common size for racing filters. Fram HP-1 is high performance version of PH-8A and supposed to handle more pressure.
Since most "full flow" oil filter systems send the full pressure of the pump to the filter, you want a better than stock filter. Cold oil pressures can exceed 100psi !
Those drain holes don't really matter. Just the center hole and it's threading are key to mounting your filter mounting correctly. _________________ AshMan40

Found this while "trolling the net", thought it would demonstrate the differences in filters even when they FIT the same mounting:

NOTE: The Fram HP1 and the Empi HP1 oil filters may NOT be the same thing. In any case, my favorite is the K&N or Wix. _________________ AshMan40
