I decided I'm going to give myself the winter to get the tin collected cleaned and some finish on them. I don't know what odds and ends I'll need but I can't see stuffing it in and then the snow flies.
Upon dissection I found I never really took an inventory of my old single port engine, I took it for granted. The lower sled tins were missing, and the carb gasket was blown through. No wonder it overheated and never ran quite right. I have lost some of the fear I had pulling it apart. Next time it will be easier.
Not that I will rebuild that engine soon, just curious. I have two thermostats to choose from and a dual port air box that has the caboose on the back. I'm going to start a pile of the seconds to start collecting a spare engine.
For some reason the inside of the air box on the dead single is very sooty. the the fan is greasy sooty. Any ideas where would that come from? _________________ 1969 Ghia

1776 Engine built by Dr. V-DUB ( Neil Caraway ).
New case
SCAT counter- weighted crank-shaft balanced and compression height set for pump gas
Engle 110 cam and lifters
High performance springs and retainers (need replaced)
Finned aluminum valve covers
Deep sump oil pan
Full flow oil pump with screw on oil filter
Bosch 009 distributor
Lightened flywheel
Weber two barrel progressive carb and intake
German stock VW muffler
High Output alternator
German heater boxes
Suggestions on certain things would be interesting. I am trying to piece together a highway driver which can occasionally make my 30 mile commute.
I am planning out my tin I WILL HAVE EVERY DAMN PIECE OF TIN before i go anywhere.[/i]
This is the stuff I have that came with it and I had left from other engines.
I have the small pulley tin.
I need a front apron.
Fresh air hoses
plug wires
new valve springs
powdercoating done
I also need to be sure the flaps are flappin and check out the two thermostats I have see if they're serviceable. _________________ 1969 Ghia

Looking good, but I suggest you lose the Progressive and get a set of duals. The power difference and ease of tuning will be well worth the switch. |

So strange to see pictures of Iowa City… even stranger to see pictures of a Karmann Ghia in Iowa City (that was not mine). Not many of them driving around up there in Eastern Iowa.
Yours looks really solid! Congrats.
I moved from IC to OKC about 18 months ago. Used to drive a 1962 pearl white cabriolet around Iowa City (sand top). Like a fool I sold the car to the owner of El Ranchero/El Dorado about 5 years ago.
I have been searching for another Ghia down here around OKC for about a month now. Few good leads, but I'm finding it hard to convince the owners to let them go (these are hard cars to part with).
Regards,
Noah |

Thanks, for the welcome and the heads-up on the Del City Ghia. I've looked at it. That one is just not what I'm looking for. Also, I'm mostly interested in early 60's.
Trying to find the right balance between affordability and restorability.
All the nice Ghias I've seen that are drivable (or are fully-to-partially restored) are attached to owners who don't want to get rid of them. Surprise!
I've been watching CL for ads, both around OKC and around Dallas, Tulsa, Lawton, etc… Of course I check here everyday, too.
Does the OKC club still meet at Penn and 240 in the spring/summer? |

It looks like your lower tins are on backwards, because the opening should be towards the back of the car, not the front. You should have two little oddly shaped pieces of tin there instead. And I believe your coil is upsidedown also.
If it were me, I would not deal with dual carbs unless you had to. And if it's not a race engine, then you certianly don't have to. You'll get just as much low end grunt with a single carburetor as you will with the duals, you just won't get as much horsepower at the top end. But you probably won't be redlining your engine to 7500rpms anyway. So why bother having to deal with linkages when you don't have to? Just my opinion. |

Thats just a pic of all my parts loose stacked on the longblock. I finally got the flaps I needed and am getting ready to powdercoat some of it soon. _________________ 1969 Ghia

so far so good, have hit center a few times up front, but other than that no rubbing. |
Wonder why VW never did factory Ghia Ragtops. Looks great! _________________ AKA Destroyer of the Rants...... |

Yeah its all good but the leaking problem. When I get new canvas I should be all good. As it got old it retracted so its hard to get latched up front, plus I don't have the original hardware yet.
This is a Canadian top apparently they were a popular aftermarket up there. _________________ 1969 Ghia

Looking at getting:
Header, Muffler, plug wires, Alt bracket, and front tin, and the little chute that sends the hot air from the oil cooler out.
Getting pretty darn close. _________________ 1969 Ghia

Both trans mounts are broken, going to order up some rubber ones. I have heard bad things about these red ones.

Finally got it in there, now looking around for an inexpensive exhaust to get me through for a while. It would be nice to have it rolling for the winter so I can move it around a little - or with any luck find indoor storage.
