my 69 built in july 68 does not have one. the door piller tag is just a USA certification is it not? |
1969 model year production didn't start until August. If your car was made in July 68, you need to change your user ID because it's a 68.
My early Aug 68, 1969 Beetle didn't have the VIN tag on the dash. |
stand corrected .. Aug |

ok
in the USA , the cars are designed and manufactured
for a specific year ( not sure when the law changed for VW)
so the mfg, at the end of the fiscal year. July1, 1967, start making
cars for the 1968 USA market year. (usa is paranoid they are getting old cars ,if made more than 6month early (not me)
and also hate for mfg to actually test track a car off the line.
due to some really crazy people here. (makes car used.....)
that is how you see new cars, starting in DEC.
they were made before DEC 31st
some well before.
on newer cars, you can see that body plate
it clearly says Mfg date. but is not model year |
The law isn't that specific.
The only law covering the advertised model year is that the model you are building must have been manufactured at least on Jan 1 of the calendar year to be called that model year.
So technically, a manufacturer can build a car on Jan 2 2011 and legally call it a 2012 model year car.
Thus, the last Beetles made in Mexico, which were made in July 2003, can't be called a 2004 model year car because they weren't made on Jan 1, 2004. _________________
