A noise started about two days ago that sounds like loose valve. I did a search here and found it could be the crankshaft pulley. When the engine runs, the crankshaft pulley is rotating but it isn't even. I took the v-belt off thinking maybe the belt is too tight, the pully still looks it it is warped while rotating. What could be the issue? It is a 1200cc 40hp _________________ 1964 Beetle Convertible |

Could be loose or bent. I'd block it, put it in gear, then torque it down. If that doens't fix it (which is probable), shop for an unbent original. Stay away from aftermarket "power pulleys" but a well-built, original size, new pulley with timing marks will also work well. |

Hold on there. A crank pully does not wobble on it's own unless it's a after mkt alum piece.
I'm leaning towards a broken crank since it's a 1200 40hp engine that are known in the past to break when being lugged down.
Anyone with me on that? |

Yup, I'm with ya. I drove a '65 with a broken crank. Take the belt off, put trans in first gear, and try to move the pulley back and forth. If it's very loose the crank is broken. |
