|
|
Hi there,
I am new to the site although I've been checking out this site for some time. Figured I might as well register and introduce myself.
My name is Rick and I am from the Netherlands, Europe.
In februari this year I bought my first bus, which is also my first aircooled VW. I also have a 1977 Golf (Rabbit) that I am restoring, but that project has been put on hold.
On to the bus. It's a microbus that was built in august 1968, so actually a '69 model. It has been imported from California but was originally delivered elsewhere in the US.
The bus needed no welding except for the front cabin floor left and right and the battery-tray. Next to the welding I replaced about every moving part. Brakes, brakelines, cv joints, tie-rods, hand brake cables, trottle cable, etc, etc.
The engine turned out to be a big nightmare and was built up with parts that did not belong to a bus engine. So I had to built a complete new one from scratch. So I am now running a 1641cc engine.
I only have to tackle some minor electrical problems and adjust the brakes before I can go to the DMV for registration.
Some pics of the past few months:
The bus in the showroom
Delivery on a VW LT flatbed.
Work started in the rear. Removing the engine.
Brakes before.
Brakes after.
Engine before.
Engine after. It was built in last sunday and started up for the first time yesterday (monday).
Old and new in one shot.
Rotten floor.
Flintstone style floor
Funky green piece welded in.
Working in front of my garage as it won't fit inside due to the height and my Golf/Rabbit still being under construction in there.
Mayhem
Engine before.
Engine after.
Resprayed the engine bay and firewall
This padded dash out
For an unpadded sprayed one (only used in very early European baywindows)
Dash out to sort the spagethi. It has been built back in already, but I don't have a picture of this.
Hope you enjoy the pics. |

Must be alot of$$ to drive that around compared to most local vehicles? _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=460364

I'd replace the 0O9 with a vacuum/mechanical distributor.. it will run cooler.

That's cool. I was in Florida for my 3 week honeymoon in 2009.
The bus population over here is pretty big. But we are bringing over a lot of busses from the US since you guys have all the rustfree ones.
These busses are expensive here as they are in the US. I'll tell you something funny though...local verhicles are more expensive here than in the US. BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volkswagen, etc cost about twice as much here thanks to taxes and other charges. _________________ - Baywindow microbus- aug '68 - 1641cc twinport (AS)

The guy that built me this engine insisted on using a 009 distributor and I had it come over from the US via this site! He wants to use this one because the third cilinder that usually overheats stays cooler this way... _________________ - Baywindow microbus- aug '68 - 1641cc twinport (AS)

Nice looking bus,
Will you be taking it to Budel?
I'm hopefully traveling over from the UK for Budel in 2 weeks in my 68.
Just got to get the engine running properly first. |

Thanks for the kind comments peeps.
I will not be taking it to Budel because Budel is next weekend and I won't be able to get it to the MOT/DMV before june 22th. Budel will be over by then. Unfortunately!!
I will still go, but with my daily driver.
Hope you get your engine sorted in time and maybe i'll see you in Budel than.

Bo jive. Although I am not sure how that phrase interprets on that side of the pond, it is "el bunko" thinking.
It appears that is a single port set up and is likely using a 30 series carb, you may want to look around and find a good working more correct distributor for it.
Something more like this....
VW 113-905-205T, Bosch 0231 137 035 or 036
Can Use: VW 113-905-205M, Bosch 0231 137 021
Replacement: VW 111-905-205AA, Bosch 0231 137 039 |

Why remove the padded dashboard to replace it with an unpadded one? Europeans paid extra for the padded dash. _________________ "I spud therefore I yam." |

Looks like you are taking good care of your Bus :0)
It looks like you had a 1971 Bus intake manifold on the engine that came with the bus… does it have the dog house cooler? If you have the dog house cooler, that is great…
Just an FYI, there are many seals that help seal up the engine and engine compartment, making sure all of them are installed, it’s important and at the same time hard to do, because few people have seen an engine with all the correct seals installed…
If you post some good close-ups of your engine(front & Back) and pictures of the engine compartment, I’m sure Samba members will help point out if you are missing any :0) _________________ Current VWs 71 T2 Westy SO-72/6(Miami), 71 Crew Cab, 2015 GSW TDI

Hey guys and girls...
@ Randy in Maine: The guy that built me this engine is a 74 year old pensionado whom has been building VW engines for longer then I have been on this earth. I am not saying that you are wrong or don't know what you are talking about, but I do have confidence in my engine guy. And I have to because I don't know too much about aircooled engines.
It is a twinport 1641cc engine with a 34 Pict 3 carb and a 009 distributor.
@ Chabanais: I replaced the padded dash for two reasons. First reason is that the padded dash that was in wasn't the correct one somehow. I needed an early dash with the holes for the steering column support tin closer to each other.
Primary reason however is that the unpadded dash is much much rarer and way cooler. And it has that nice vintage look to it.
@ Bleyseng: I am way in the south. Very close to both the German and Belgian border. How come you visit that often? Family?
@ dcdubs: Where is Asgard?
@ Lionhart94010: Sure am taking good care of the bus although is costs loads of money. But I knew that up front. I know about the seals and how important they are. I believe I have them all in place. There is one on the rear, in the front, on the sides and around the lid. Also around the oil cooler duct outlet. Do you know of any other rubbers that I forgot?
BTW: The intake on the old engine was probably a 1200 intake or something, but it sure isn't the correct one. And yes it came with the dog house cooler. Luckily the correct one. _________________ - Baywindow microbus- aug '68 - 1641cc twinport (AS)

In that case, a 205ZB centrifical/vacuum would be a real asset.
From www.oldvolkshome.com
"VW 043-905-205 ZB, Bosch 0231 170 034 (Mexico)
This is THE Distributor to use on your stock engine w/Solex 30PICT-3, H30/31PICT Series or 34PICT Series carbureted 1600 Beetle thru 1974 (75-79 w/Carb) & Type 2 1600 thru 1971. It is NOT recommended for use with the 30PICT-1 or 30PICT-2 because the vacuum signal is incorrect for the vacuum assist to work properly. This Distributor is essentially a "009" with a Vacuum Advance Assist to help prevent hesitation in all of those Stop-n-Go situations in city traffic. The Mechanical Advance takes over out on the highway to provide the most excellent Advance Curve in all sorts of engine loads. If you're running an original Dual-Vacuum Distributor on your Beetle 71-74/Type 2 1971 application(s), you will need to cap off the "Retard" Vacuum Port located on the rear of the Carburetor. Available new from a number of VW Parts Suppliers." |

OK
Never heard of Asgard before, but I do know Valhalla although we call it Walhalla. Being in the bus is my Walhalla. It is my favourite place to be in and I am spending lots of time in it and under it at the moment. Haven't driven it for more than 10 yards though. Hope to be driving it on the road real soon. _________________ - Baywindow microbus- aug '68 - 1641cc twinport (AS)

Thanks man, appreciate your tips and will look into it. How about an electronic ignition though? Whould that not be even better? Can you already tell that I am new in the aircooled scene? _________________ - Baywindow microbus- aug '68 - 1641cc twinport (AS)
