Going to get her painted next week. I figure when they pop the windows out I might be able to work on some things up (e.g. tighten up the curtain lines behind the Cabinets).

Is there anything else I can/should do while the windows are out?

If they aren't already, consider having them tinted. The tint cuts down on the heat gain and fading of the interior.

If you don't have the later model rear windows with vents, those are nice to add if you can find a set. They do increase ventilation to the rear of the van - but not an absolute necessity, just nice to have.

Replace all the window rubber with the no-molding type(even the front door windows).

I pulled everything off the doors and had the inside of them painted as well, with windshield and dash out, "A" pillars were painted.

Question: which cuts heat gain to the interior of a vanagon better.
tinting the window glass with non reflective dark tints or a light curtain like the late westys use drawn behind clear glass?

One of the best tints available. http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/Scotch...indowFilm/

I'm currently installing the 60 tint. 97% infrared rejection, 99% UV rejection with hardly noticeable tint level.

Just a heads up to those people that take the windows to a tint shop
OUT of the vehicle
if the tinter driod is slightly asleep at the wheel & the window have no TINT they are used to tinting the window on the logo side of the window
(you know the little emblem on the window that show the audi vw logo)
since on most vehicles all window are logo on the inside of the glass

Well if you never noticed the rear side windows are the same window.
The right side window is installed logo IN like you would expect
the left side windows installed logo OUTSIDE

Now in tinter droid mode you will now get the rear side windows back
1 with tint inside the other tint outside & you have an issue
If they were not in droid mode they will THINK & realize the window orientation ..don't count on IT Smile

So make SURE you mark the side of the window to tint to avoid any issue
