-'72 had the largest production number and sales. Obviously the demand was a result of the favorable reputation created by prior models and particularly the prior year. But once the public became familiar with the '72 changes and absorbed the ramifications of the new Pancake engine, interest in VW busses dwindled. Continuing in a downward spiral.
-'72 models marked the creation of unobtaniun and the beginning of extremely expensive engine replacement parts.
-'72 started the dividing line of favoritism between early and late bus owners.
-'72 year models began the continuing reduction of repair facilities that would be knowledgable and willing to work on this newest type of engine.

What makes it different from the pumps on a 73 or 74? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

My error the pumps are the same.
How about last year that only manual shift available? I believe 1973 was the first year for automatics? |

Old dkp driver pm'd me with a front splash pan he'd found on a 72 kombi. Mine didn't have one on when I got it, and I've never checked, but I think this might be a 72 only part. When I fix the dent I've put in mine, I'm thinking of welding shut the inspection hole.
as compared to the later.
Anyone know for sure if 73 had the inspection hole? |

72 was the year when buses were clinging to the 60's but the 70's dug their nails in and started clawing away at the buses ass first starting with the air vents and the tail lights and 73 was when the full transformation happened. _________________ 1971 delux sunroof Stock

Might just have missed it but heater cables are a 72 only item. I thought 73 was also missing the lid over the engine. I'd sure like to have that feature but for the big stuff, I just pull the engine. _________________ Once, when you were in love, you bought one ring. I have bought my bus three SETS! |

On deluxe 72's the chrome trim in all windows is steel, except for the back window which is the first year of the plastic chrome window trim. I might be wrong. _________________ 1971 Deluxe Sunroof Bay 1905 stroker, dual idf40's, 74mm Scat forged crank, engle 110 cam. CB 044 heads, AutoCraft rockers, chromoly push rods

im a little confused, you have a 71 or a 72? ..or both? bus in your gallery is 71 - thats yours right? sunroof
the 71 had aluminum trim, i'd almost say you have a 71 with a replaced rear window if you have plastic back there _________________ May of '72 Deluxe. 2.0L L-Jet CS & 091 trans conversion

I have several buses. The 72 is a 72, as you see in the mplate thing. It has aluminum trim, including the windshield, but the back is plastic. _________________ 1971 Deluxe Sunroof Bay 1905 stroker, dual idf40's, 74mm Scat forged crank, engle 110 cam. I have a 72 dormobile and learned the hard way that it had a bunch of one year only parts. Lucky for me I found another complete 72 tin top Westy that someone hacked the rear torsion housing off, but left everything else. Now I have everything handy to complete the project.
Can't wait to enjoy it with the family _________________ SOUTHERN INTEGRITY AIRCOOLERS
