PostPosted: Thu Jun 09, 2011 5:21 pm    Post subject: Coral Red '57/Proper Wheel Colors Reply with quote

Was going to do something productive this weekend to the '57 and was wondering what the proper wheel colors, inner/outer, should be so that I could repaint them properly? Seems to be original paint, with the outer being Coral and the inner, due to age, a nasty brown looking color. Thanks in advance. I know it is probably a simple question, but I searched and could not find a clear answer.

outside L74 red brown inside L87 pearl white. My guess you might have to paint the outside coral red as there very well might not be a formula for L74. The outer rim colors are sometimes problematic, but maybe there is or someone can help you out.

hello,
I believe the L74 red brown with L87 Pearl White, was the original color for the rims as well.

But my choice was just to have them painted in the color of the car
with L87 Pearl White in the middle.

Here is my car for reference Wink

I've been searching in vain for L 74 rusty brown, with no luck.

I posted the question in Body/Paint,with no result.
my local auto paint suppliers can't do it.....and Towerpaint
just emailed that they can't find the formula.

The outer rim color is L74 Rusty brown and the disc is L277 silver beige.
These are used with 57-58 coral red sedan.

If any one has info on L 74 please post it!

thanks,

Jeff

Jeff,

have you actually painted your wheels using L277? I had problems locating that formula as well which why I ended up painting my prairie beige oval prairie beige & L87 & suggesting L87. Went nuts trying to find the codes. You can see my thread here and note that IN2VWS literature clearly shows the L277 for a coral red wheel.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=292621&highlight=l277

Went to the regional Glasurit supplier, everything I could think of. Unfortunately, many of the wheel formulas don't exist. But stale air having an actual rim might help if he is a painter, knows someone who is, or be willing to take it to a good shop and have them match it, if they'd be willing. About the only way to do it. Unless you decide to throw some brown into the mix for coral red.

stale air: that's a nice looking color on the rim.

Ok, I go back & look at the rim, almost a chestnut brown from the split beetle/barndoor era in the photo.

No, I also didn't have any success with getting either color.

My spare tire had original paint, the "rusty brown" rim was
actually very rusty, but the hub ( L277 ) was in fair condition.

The color/spray can I found that was fairly close was
Valspar gloss aerosol, 65004 Almond.

I checked the chestnut brown pics in the gallery, and it is not
red enough. This rusty brown color is a strange bird, which really
is beautiful with the coral red.

I'm about to go to my duPont paint man armed with the above posted
closeup of the spare wheel, and hit the chip book.

I don't know whatelse to do.

Jeff, you are right that the rim stale air has is sweet. It must look really proper having that red/brown rim sitting on a coral red oval. good luck with the hunt.

Here are two photos I took in 2004 of a very complete and original paint Coral Red oval at Kelley Park. Would like to know the owner, as he/she may be able to assist us with getting the correct formula for an accurate match for L74 Rusty Brown.

I realize this is old, but has anyone ever tried to request L74 from paintscratch?

Wondering if it's a waste of time or if I should give it a shot..

paintscratch (aka San Leandro Color) is very good with VW body colors, however, accent colors is likely another matter. It couldn't hurt to try, the worst thing is you get a NO.

I am not too proud to necro this.

Did you ever go check with Paintscratch?

Did anyone every ask someone with a rim painted this way?

Inquiring minds want to know.

I wish I had known about the place as I spent almost 4 months in the Hayward, San Leandro area during 2012 and would have tried just about everything to come up with some kind of formula.

Out of the pictures and cars I have seen, the color L358 Garnet red/ Granat rot from 58, is quite close.

This one I think use Garnet red:

Red/rusty brown looks alot like... Rust-O-Leum rusty metal primer. http://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/stops-rust/rusty-metal-primer-spray/

I wonder how the wheel would look with several coats of the Rust-O-Leum, then wet-sanded with like 1500 grit and sprayed over with gloss clear? Probably a reasonably close match. You can try this at home on a spare wheel, and compare it to Woody's shots...

You know I think I will give that suggestion a try. I painted up the interior components sans the seat frames with Silver Beige last weekend and hope to be doing the same to the rims sometime in the next month. After that I will try out the rusty metal primer, some 1500 sand paper and some form of gloss coat to see. As long as I tape up the center portion of the rim correctly it can't hurt to try.

Here is what I came up with using the previous suggestion. It is not perfect but since the car is far from perfect it works for me. I do need to wet sand and polish to knock some of the shine down still.
