I am 16, i have a grand saved up already (from mowing about 1000 lawns), and my parents will double anything i make. I want to get a 66 bug that's about $4000 to $4500. Owning one of these is a dream. I have been studying up for a year now and know quite a bit. Anyone have any tips as to how i can earn that other grand? _________________ 1967 Bug:

Pray for rain - it makes the grass grow crazy in Seattle!
And start charging more than $1 a lawn. Or come mow mine - I'll give you a $1 a week. _________________ 71 Ghia Coupe - stock body - no rust! Powered by a 2110 W/Dual HPMX 44's - Rancho Pro Street Transaxle - A/C by Gilmore

A job. (being serious) Considering you live at home with no rent to pay or any other payments if you work through the summer at min wage full time you would have it no issues. |

Fact: Once you get a car, you no longer have any money!!
I Agree, get a steady job after school and through the summer. You've got initiative that I don't see in a lot of young kids!! GOOD FOR YOU!!!!
Your parents must be proud.
My nephew in Indiana, no job, gets money somehow (I suspect dealing) has been arrested for dealing in a school zone, is on 2 years probation, looks like the kind of creep that if you are coming at him on a side walk, you'll cross the street to avoid an encounter. It is all so Sad, my sister in law's heart is broken. He just turned 18 and his life is a wreck already! This kid has never worked until last year a 3 month stint a McDonalds to show the judge he is trying!! Quit after his sentencing. He feels entitled and if his parents don't give to him as he feels they should he is all pissy and obnoxious!!
I'm proud of my Nephew!! Oh, dropped out of high school in his senior year also!! He is on the fast track to a major crash!

Mow some more lawns!
Seriously, it can be a good gig. Back in junior high through high school I never got a "real" job, I just mowed lawns. I got enough customers to where I made some damn good money and it was all tax free.
I even kept mowing after I did get a real job..... because it was damn good money and all tax free! |

Yep, you'll need a steady job once you have a car. the purchase is only the start. Maintenance, gas, maintenance, insurance, maintenance. You don't buy a car to save money.......

Keep mowing lawns, great money and tax free...you won't make nearly as much working some minimum wage job...good luck!!!
Hell, I mowed lawns when I was 12 to 17, made advertisements to put on people's doors and was very busy...at the time I blew most of it on quarters for video games LOL _________________ 1968 Squareback

You know the old saying - if it has tits or wheels it will give you problems.
My older brother (RIP Bro) had a small sticker on one of his cars - on the passenger side right next to the door handle with those words. His GF didn't much care for that sticker. _________________ 71 Ghia Coupe - stock body - no rust! Powered by a 2110 W/Dual HPMX 44's - Rancho Pro Street Transaxle - A/C by Gilmore

You might try fixing lawn mowers instead of mowing lawns (or both). My son started his own business at 14 years of age and cleaned up! He charged $35.00 labor plus parts for a "tune up" (clean or replace filters, clean or replace spark plug, clean carburetor, change oil, sharpen blade) and had the neighbors lining up at the door ( they start calling around February ). He did this for three consecutive spring / summers earning about $800.00 - $900.00 per summer. He saved enough to by his first car.
After three years he is still driving the car every day. What he learned repairing lawn mower engines has payed off big time. _________________ Guilt is a useless emotion |

considering you are from the Northwest, screw the idea of mowing lawns. I did this before I was 16 in Oregon. It rained so much, you dont mow too many lawns, 9 months out of the year. It is better to landscape and do your own land maintenance. I used to edge, do weeds, plant trees and flowers, landscape, and haul yard debris until I was 16= then got a job doing freight at a feed/farm supply company, which paid better. I COULD OF made more money with the landscaping thing but the issue was that I was still in school and couldnt be there when the clients wanted me- in the daytime= so they eventually hired out to crews. either increase your capacity or get a real job somewhere.
Also, dont plan on $4000 being good. It wont go too far with an old dub, especially if you dont have experience working on these. things will break and and up real quick. these are not the cheap cars they used to be. even when POs say everything is good, it usually aint! |

I worked at McDondalds 20 hours a week(after school and wknds) and bought my first 73 Super. Could not have owned it without a job. Sold it and bought a 66 later. The job allows you to not only maintain the car, but add to or restore parts. If you don't have tons of other expenses, your 20 hour a week job will go a long way with funds. _________________ Stefan

just wanted to say Kudos to a kid that's willing to work for what he wants. Good job kid, keep up the hard work, it pays off
Let your lawn customers know you do other odd jobs. Cleaning out roof rain gutters, clean windows, wash cars, etc. Tell them you are saving up for your first car, and they will most likely keep calling you back, cause like me, people like to hear stories of kids working for what they want _________________ Stop dead photo links! Count me in on this too, I see way too many kids who expect things to be given to them. Hat's off to you Sir.
