I have the same color. Is that primer in the first pics or just before doing clear coat? Where did you get your paint, and is it a perfect match to the original?

2 stage paint(base/clear) local auto paint shop with the VW code, close enough as no need to do the interior doors.

Is anything special required to spray the mirrors like that? I'm assuming they were black plastic? They look great matching the body.

Painting the mirrors depends on if you have manual or electric. The electric ones have a smooth finish on the housing that are painted either body color or trim black. The manual ones have a plastic texured housing that could be painted but would not be able to be glossy because of the texture.
My van is also Wolfham Grey. When you spray just the base color coat it is dull and almost has a texture look to it. When you lay down the clear coat the sparkle in the finish just pops. All of a sudden it has depth and shine. I was able to wet sand a spot where the clear coat had peeled. Then clear coated it doing my best to blend it in. The spot looks amazing now compared to before. Not perfect I know but much better until I can do a full window out repaint next winter. Watching the Captains van makes me impatient but I want to have enough money set aside to be sure it comes out perfect.

Whatever the auto paint guy uses. PPG most likely. The base coat looks like a stelth(sp?) bomber and yes, when you hit it with the clear it really gives it good depth. 2 coats of clear to finish. Stipp need to make the new canvas. Will publish a "how to" with template measurements so you can make your own.
Next up: the headliner/carpeted interior weekender pix............

@Captain Pike,

Did you buy or make that headliner? That gray looks awesome and I bet that the backing reduces noise as well.

What adhesive did you use to glue it to the headliner above the front seats? I was thinking about doing something like that but figured I'd need to lay the van on its roof to get good adhesion...

The Wolfram Grey Mafia... Very Happy

Did yours have the silver beltline stripe sticker on it? If so did you remove it, or just paint over it? That is some nuke-proof material VW used for that stripe; I wish the whole van had been coated in it. Razz

I painted over it after much internal mental debate. It dissapeared, I suppose it could be replaced at mucho $$$ for a 2"wide stripe or so the auto paint guy sez. I'm still shootin' the 2 coat of clear so I'll post more pix then.
I can't believe I'm selling this Franken top,I4 weekender interior....... Confused

Why?

Don't you like being paid 5 cents an hour for your troubles?

Lotta lotta work and I bet you even like that van now.

Hurts to sell cause you know you get to start over again.

I learned a LONG LONG time ago that such resto / refurbs do not pay you what it really is worth.

I stopped years, if not more than a decade ago, fixing any cars up to sell.

Fix, abuse and sell when I have another one ready to roll.

I am almost to the point now I can feel OK about selling my 85 Westy I have for so long I do not recall when I got it. The 90 just needs a good cleaning to look respectable in the neighborhood....... ya, ya, I know....but it makes the wife and kids happy when the Vanagon does not look like a POS.

So, the factory stripe - did you need to clean up the edges on yours, or was the entire thing in perfect shape? I may do this as well now that I've heard how tough that thing is to remove. Anyone ever try a rubber wheel like a body shop uses to remove stripes?
