This was bolted to the frame of the bus next to my starter. The Red/White FI wire was connected to this and then this was wired to my starter.

Any idea what it is? I was trying to clean it up, but the bolts were so rusted the plastic cracked why trying to remove the wires. I was looking to replace, but have not found anything. I've concluded it was added for some reason. I don't see it in any wiring diagrams or at any resellers.

Starter relay.

It's so your starter switch doesn't take the brunt of passing voltage all the way from the battery, up to the switch, then back to starter.

Can be used if the ignition is worn out so that the Bus won't start but usually just masking other problems like a bad ground strap(s) or dirty wiring connections.

I've never needed one on a 12-volt VW.

its the first thing people put on to fix a weak start problem...remove it and clean all the connections. You don't need it.

I've read about it. I figured it might be something alone those lines. I think this is it http://busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=WR1

So just wire it up like normal? Anyone think I should install this kit?

Yep. Got the bus running a few days ago. No problems starting the bus without the relay. Starts strong.

I think the PO did have another battery hooked up at some point. There is wiring both under the rear bench seat and to the left side of the engine bay. They may have had three batteries at some point.

It had no battery wiring too it besides the white and red and black and red wires.
