This is not for the "Type 3 faint of heart" folks, but I'm going to post it anyways. Yes, I did cut up a fairly decent '71 Squareback and transformed it into the "Baja Squared" project. After lots of work, we made a pretty nice off-road car from a pile of rubble that was headed for the junk yard. I got there and rescued it before the towing service arrived from the local dismantler. In some eyes, I'm a hero. In others, I'm a villain. For the most part, however, the folks from this Forum were very supporting throughout the build, once people realized that I was a "hacker", but not really a "hack".

So....

I figured I'd post the next build. We're going to build a Pro-Stock drag car from a 1969 Sunroof Fastback. The car is (was) really straight, my personal favorite year for a Type 3, and was sitting outside in the desert, waiting for Mother Nature to total it. I bought the car for exactly one dollar after meeting the owner at the VW Classic a week or so ago. No lie. I also bought the Type 3 one-piece fiberglass front end that you probably saw in the swap meet area if you went, and it was originally destined to be a part of the Baja Squareback, but I just couldn't pass up on a sunroof Fasty for a buck, so it's going on that instead.

The plan for this car: We're building a car and an engine in hopes to eventually try to break the Kadron World Record in the quarter mile, which is 11.33 seconds, held by Joel Mohr. I met Joel (who owns Mohr Performance) at the Classic also, and he has agreed to help us break his own record. We're going to do our best to power this car with FOUR modified Kadron carburetors, one for each cylinder. I sent the engine case out for all the cool things to strengthen it: shuffle pins, welded behind #3, etc. For now, we're preliminarily going to run this on a Type 3 configured engine. Yes, the carbs will not fit under the deck lid. It'll be cut up anyway, but heck... Dare to be different, right?

I know, I know. We may not be able to keep the cooling fan from breaking, but I have a few extras of those. We'll see what happens. It's all for fun anyways. If it doesn't work, we will have had fun trying. We'll just keep tweaking things and enjoying the car for what it is.

As money allows, we'll be ordering a crankshaft, cam, and all the internals to build a 2332cc for it to test with. The SoCal Bajas guys are all excited about coming over and building a roll cage, etc. We're bouncing the idea off a few other shops to help sponsor the car with a cool paint job, parts, etc.

We'll start here and see where this thread (and project) ends up after a few months.

******

I shot a little "porn for VW hillbillies" video that's actually kind of funny. This would be a good place to start....

As you probably know, you'll have to find a non-stock way to mount the engine to the frame. The stock engine mounting setup on IRS cars, while great for everyday driving, is too mushy for dragging.

Good luck!

ISP sells some solid subframe mounts, I can't remember if theirs are delron or aluminum, either way its better then rubber. Now for a IRS drag car I would either weld in some control arm mounts on a SA subframe, or weld on some frame horns to the IRS subframe and of course use some kafer cup style braces and use the rear engine hangers.

Awesome! The Type 3 fan is going to be an issue with high RPMs... Why not a Type 1 set up?

Looking forward to this!!

Thanks guys.

Tommy... We put a 002 bus trans in the Baja Squared project. I had to fabricate a special mount for it, but it ended up working great. For the drag car, we're probably going to go with a 091 bus tranny and see how it holds up... at least for now. We haven't gotten it all figured out quite yet. Once we get all the pieces, we'll get it hung. We'll likely modify the rear mounts again, fabricate a hanger system from the top middle, and use some sort of modification of the rear stock hanger system. I may check with Anthony about the solid mount system, ninja. Maybe that's at least some of the equation.

As to why a Type 3 engine configuration? I dunno. Probably because it's just different. I know I just can't stand seeing a kick ass notchback driving around the street, then the guy jumps up and lifts the deck lid, only to see a Type 1 engine in it.

Puke!

I'm far from a purist, as you can probably tell, but it just seems to me that the Type 3 car should be represented by a Type 3 engine.

Yeah.

I know it's a bad idea. How bad? I dunno. We may end up with a T1 in it eventually. We're going to cut the heck out of the rear hatch area. Why not toy around with a Type 3 engine to start? This is supposed to be a fun project anyway. Besides that, on the practical side, it might just be easier to try and fit all four of these carburetors on if we're not trying to avoid hitting a fan shroud. It's going to be interesting linkage, to say the least.

I ordered the 84mm crankshaft today. A little at a time we'll get there.

I'll shoot some more video in a couple days, and try to video diary this whole build. I cut that battery tray section out of the pan and welded in a new tray. I also cut the rear seat support out of it and ground everything flush. I scraped all the insulation off the pan and tunnel, and removed about 50 lbs of other junk we'll never need again. Got to lighten this car.

Keep an eye on the Classifieds if you need some cool straight parts. There are some good ones coming out of this build!

Oh... check out these babies:

It's a long story, but I always threatened to buy Phone Dials and put them on a car. All the guys in the shop here hate 'em! I found a nice pair at the swap meet and bought 'em. I sent them out to a buddy's shop to be stripped and polished, just for kicks.

Now they're the "cat's ass" of wheels! Who'd have figured?

This is part of the original "Phone Dial Phasty" concept. The wheels actually came before the fiberglass front end, which came before the car. I figured since it was such a new build, I'd catch everyone up on the whole concept from the beginning.

Here's a basic concept of how the car may look, all said and done:

It's still early in the game. We'll see how it shakes out.

More VW porn to come soon.....

I agree with the guys in your shop...they are ugly wheels and you now have 20 'cat asses' on your car-5 per wheel.

The project, on the other hand, looks pretty interesting!

Keep us posted!

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "box sections". Please clarify.

Can't argue with that.

I liked your video. And it sure didn't look like you needed to do much cutting to get the battery tray section out, I think that was already done for you Smile

Kev.... LMAO. Where you been? Swing by! I've got three more wheels to sell you! You gotta see this crazy project in person.

vlad... My front clip does not have the piece yours apparently does. It's complete, intact, and totally straight. Check the photo in the classifieds. It's solid right there.
