I purchased this car a few years ago. As we where about to start building at the same time and being offered a chance to have the car displayed in a museum I jumped at the chance.

Today I went with some friends and picked it up and bought it home. It was on display for nearly 2 years and between then and now I have done heaps or reading to find out what it is that I really have.
I know its and early standard but its hard to find out whats correct and whats not.
As the speedo is stamped 12 month of 48 It seems to have the wrong bumpers fitted and should have the smooth blades with bannana overiders.
Also not seeing another car like it here in Australia its very hard to compare.
Here are a few shots of loading it up for the trip home and the view in the rear view mirror.

Ok, so here we have some better pictures which I hope some people that have early beetles can help point out some of the parts that are incorrect.

From what I understand the semaphore switch is wrong
The bumpers are incorrect as well as the horn.
Basically I want to compile a list of parts needed to help get it back to original spec.

Very cool split!

From what I can see in the pics:

Should have a "D" regulator (those are date coded too BTW)

Should have a K (unjacketed) intake manifold

Retaining clip holding the oil filler on should not be there, it was introduced in '51.

The heater boxes appear to be the '57-'61 style. It should have the flapless heater boxes and 2 flap lower tin (shoeboxes). Some pics of that hardware in a thread I started here a long time ago called "The engine it deserves".

The wires look completely wrong, PVC instead of cloth and all the wrong colors.

I do recall seeing pics of that split with "Absinthe" on the decklid some years ago on this forum.....

Yes that would have been when I purchased the car.

You will notice the semaphores are ones you restored that I got from you.
I also have a non jacket inlet manifold which was another one of your products, if you can help me out with some tinware that would be great.

I knew the wire loom was not correct as well as the engine. The case appears to be 36hp. I have a 48 engine case now on its way.

Nice to see a split in Aus. I'm curious about which museum was it on display at?

Cheers,

Removed the front bumper last night and assembled the replacement bumper. Not sure if the bumper has a top and bottom edge but the whole thing seemed to go together ok.

The fuel tank lid is incorrect for this car. The one you have began in late 1949. You need the one with two rivits and no VW logo. It has two spring arms that serve to hold the mesh basket in place in the tank filler neck.

I have one if you need to see pictures.

I have to say that if given the chance to own your car, I would jump in aheartbeat! What an excellent example of an early car.
yes, JH is right, there are some aspects that could be attended to, but who's car is ever pristine?

You are very fortunate indeed to have a car as nice as yours...no wonder it was asked to be on display in a museum.

I actually gave him the correct cap back in 2009 during the VW Classsic weekend. Cool

There's so little missing. About the best I can do other than what's been mentioned is to point out the later oil pressure switch, and the fact that the summer/winter cooling control on the right of the fan shroud is missing and the hole welded over. The coil also looks newer.

Ah, I haven't been there in about four years. They asked for a Moke for display a few months back. I didn't offer mine as it's too far away.

Cheers,
Brett.

Just need to fit a seal and its ready to go on.
Another thing to tick off the list.

Very nice car! What month was it built? Where did you find the bumpers? I'm still looking for those. I see that the ID plate has been replaced. You need the one with the black background.

As far as I know the car was built on the 12th month of 1948.

I got the bumpers from someone in Austria, I got a front and rear blade and 2 bannana overiders. I didn't speak to them as they didn't speak english. I had a german friend whom brought them for me over the phone.

I'm not sure on the id plate, I'll have to look into that. Do you have a link or picture of the one you think would be correct.
I do know that it should also be rivited to the body and not screwed.
