|

Ok so I am replacing my carpet in the front. Under the padding there was moisture. The drivers side had quite a bit of rust. I sanded and wire brushed it and got all the rust off. I sealed it with some rubberized coating. I am always learning something new about these vans. So my suggestion to anyone new on here or looking to buy a van is LIFT THE CARPET! I feel I am very lucky that the rust was only surface rust. I am excited about what the finished product will be. _________________ 1990 VW Vanagon tin top weekender Carat

I second that....
I finally started to take care of some of the rust issues under my 89 Westy windshield which led me to lifting my front carpet. years of Oregon rain moisture had left me with a golf ball size rust hole in that front corner of the passenger wheel well. As the wife and kids were scheduled to take the van x-country the next day I had no time to deal with it but to put on a rust inhibitor.
Check around your window seals for those bubbles and deal with it asap!
Check under your carpets, stop those leaky windshields before your looking for a donor van for cut and weld metal!
on the bright side, I'm excited to tackle this project late this summer when its finally bone dry here on the coast. _________________ ~Bryan

ive noticed this is caused mainly from two thing, apart from water leaks. 1 spills from filling the washer get absorbed and secreted by the pad and 2 condensation forms, especially in the winter from the warm inside metal/air vs cold outside metal/air. i use some absorbent mats under the pad in the winter time. |

For sure check by your seat belts.
This is what I found.

I was very fortunate that my only rust was surface rust around the gas pedel. I have read post on here about the seat belt rust problems. Sorry to see that about your seatbelt anchor points but fortunately you caught it before someone got hurt. _________________ 1990 VW Vanagon tin top weekender Carat

While you're at it, you may want to lift the rubber footwell mat too.
A quick way to tidy this up and zap any rust may be found in my post here:

I recently inadvertently shoved aside the carpet covering the upper/forward part of DS wheel arch.
Sheesh.
Rust in the seam.
