hi all,
I have the choice of cutting the a wire of the tiny speaker inside the door chime relay and leave the relay on the fuse box.. or remove the relay completely..
could you please tell what other function that relay is doing beside the chime? (88' vanagon WBX)
thanks a lot, |

Just remove it, it doesn't do anything but make noise if I remember right. You can tell from the wiring diagram though.

It has two functions:
1) Seat belt warning chime.
2) Door open-key in ignition warning chime.
Just remove the relay. _________________ ~Kamz

I removed mine.
There is a mod to turn it into a "left your lights on, moron" chime. |

I removed mine though I didn't place it in front of my tire and run over it. I just threw it in the glove compartment in case some future owner (when they pry my cold, dead fingers from the steering wheel) wants it. Since my vintage requires the key to lock the drivers door there's no way I'm gonna lock my keys in and the seat belt thing is so automatic I sure as hell don't need a buzzer to remind me. _________________ 83 1/2 Westy waterboxer

watch it or I'll post a picture of the earlier nasty buzzer chime.
I did the headlight warning thing as more of a lark than anything else. But as I drive with my headlights on during the day, has reminded me a few times to turn them right off when stopped.
How did I manage without it?

Crap. I wish I'd known that before I:
1) removed relay
2) placed in bench vice
3) turned vice handle clockwise to full lock
I checked the Bentley but couldn't find anything on the procedure. _________________ -James

No, Harbor Freight didn't have any. So I got the 4" vice thinking it was close enough to 10cm to work. I'm already regretting it. _________________ -James

Never say never.
If you lock your driver door, exit the van via the slider door and then lock the slider, you are locked out. Ask me how easy this is to do.
A well stashed hide-a-key is mandatory on any vehicle, IMHO.

Not really, as I recall its a pretty nice ding and something to get all nostalgic about. I dug mine out of the glove box and am gonna connect according to the “Lights on” wiring given above. Something I do regularly. _________________ Vanagon ’83 diesel AAZ w/Giles injection, 5spd 4.57R&P+TBD and a '78 diesel Rabbit |
