I've been thinking. Vintage VW's are more than just cars, and the people who drive them are not a random mix (though we are ecclectic)
What elements make VW a lifestyle for you?
Share here...thanks! _________________ vroom. |

Like-minded friends. We've got a great group of VW people in the San Antonio area that help each other out. It's good to know that with one phone call, somebody's on the way with help.
Eclectic to say the least! |

At a glance you have a pretty good idea what year a bug is even though they have remained pretty much the same for about 50 years...and you do "Oh, its only a late...."
Your better half considers new Beetles "posers".......
Your grandkids have a specific car of yours that is their favorite and they know each ones name, plus they seek out bug or buggie hot wheels cars at the store. They REALLY appreciate the VW X-mas ornament or T-shirt you bought them.
The phrase "They don't leak - they mark their spot" is well understood - in fact you have specific carpet scraps or chunks of plywood for each car.
Your better half has helped you install at least one engine or tranny.
AND their right leg is MUCH stronger than their left from helping you bleed the brakes.
You spend more time on thesamba than any other web site.
You have your parts suppliers in your cell speed dial.
I could go on and on.........But we are taking her buggy out for a run....So screw this, lets go driving..... _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

I grew up in the 50's with American cars and bought my first VW in 1970.
The things I love about these old cars that I hated with American cars are:
Things don't fall off.
Knobs don't come off in your hand
The paint last
No rattles you can't easily fix
No dumb factory mistakes
Made with pride and care.
Good handling.
Trust in the car itself.
And I'm not alone--It's the one car most previous owners wish they hadn't sold. |

The vehicle?
To me it really doesn't matter what ACVW you own (you should own one or at least be looking for one/saving for one), it really doesn't matter how much you drive it (the more the better) or how much you work on it (at least a little). But it's the vehicle. Don't care where you're from or what you do, may not have any words to say to you, but I know we have one thing in common.
For me, all I want to do is drive my bug. I've been getting up Sunday mornings before the traffic gets too thick and just take it on a back road or a secondary highway and put my foot into it, hear the little whistle as I let my foot off momentarily. It's cathartic. I can't think of a better way to unwind than to drive a ACVW. |

There's nothing like walking into an airconditioned building after being in a non airconditioned car in the dead of summer. Modern car wimps just don't know what they're missing. _________________ All he needed was a wheel in his hand and four on the road.

Closing the door on a 40 year old car without a "clunk" or a "bump.... SLAM!!!" In reality though, it's just really nice people. I haven't met a lot of bad people with VW's. But I've seen a lot of weird dudes with Chevys, Fords, and what not. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=366056 - My '73 Super Build. 2332cc, 16" Fuchs |

Leaving for a car show super early because there is hopefully a little frost or dew on the mile long dirt lane so your car doesnt get covered with dust before you even make it to the highway.
Late winter early spring rituals:
Waiting for the first day that there is no salt on the roads and they are reasonably dry so you can get one of the VWs out of winter storage.
Cycling the battery charger from car to car starting in early March and then hooking the batteries back up. Airing up the tires.....Watching the 10 day forecast ------- COOL Can probably drive one of the bugs next Wed.
Rediscovering how good these are in the snow even with summer radials. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

The feeling of the road under you, the sound of that little VW engine; even the High Pro engines have that classic VW sound. the looks when you do get out of the car to go into the store and someone ask you what year is your VW.
These and more are things that embody the VW Culture on a personal level for me |

I'd say it's a huge combination of things- the other people in the hobby, the people who aren't in the hobby but still come up to talk about your car at the gas station and the stories they have about the Beetle they or their friend had back in high school... then there's the sound of the engine. The smell of the car. The way it drives. The way it speaks to you with little noises and how you can just feel everything about the car. Those little quirks that you're so used to in your car (ie, the right time to downshift into 2nd when the synchro is shot, and what to do when the horn won't honk) but if anyone else was to drive it they'd be panicking. That feeling you get when you see another ACVW on the road while you're driving your own one. My list goes on and on and on. _________________ '60 Canadian Standard, '64 Bug, another '64 Bug, '66 Bug, '69 Sunroof Bug, '69 GT3 Bug, '71 Super, '72 Super, '73 Canadian Custom, '74 Love Bug, '83 Mexi Bug, '85 Cabrio, '94 Mexi Bug, '99 New Beetle, '02 New Beetle Turbo S, '03 New Beetle VR6.
