How far can you safely let the brake shoe adjuster screws out? These are new shoes, and I still feel like I need to bring them out more. Can't imagine what I'll have to do as the shoes wear?

On quick glance, your work so far looks great. So your drums fit over the shoes as adjusted in this photo? If so, I suspect your drums are pretty worn, perhaps beyond the wear limits. You should have the inner diameter measured and if past the wear limit (I don't have my Bentley with the I.D. wear limit spec handy) you may need to invest in better used or new drums. Those adjusters are pretty far out already.

thanks, I never did measure the drums inside. I just went by eye lol. They were nice and smooth, no ridges anywhere.
This is my first time working with a bus, so I wasn't sure if that adjustment length was normal or not.
Time to mic out a drum, the specs should be in a "without guesswork" scan on here right? _________________ 1957 Beetle

From a '65 Without Guesswork. Should be the same for my '67 Drums.

The problem with having a brake drum that is way over the legal limit is that the piston in the wheel cylinder could pop out (the O-ring seal). _________________ Don't worry; be happy. (Baba) |

With drums within specs the adjusters should be almost all the way in. I would suspect that your drums are worn beyond specs or there is something funky about those shoes. |

Good to know. Shoes came from BusDepot, I believe they are Canadian made?
Hope to measure some spare drums I have at home tonight! _________________ 1957 Beetle

Yes, this is true. Don't ask me how I know. _________________ 1959 Single Cab “Otto”

Did it come completely out? Is it possible to come out enough to not let fluid dump out, but perhaps take in some air? (doubtful) _________________ 1957 Beetle

Mine dumped fluid. It's been a few years, so I'm hazy on the details, but my brakes were gone when I tried to use them. It was a combination of bad star adjuster clickers, worn out drums and a single circuit master cylinder. My buddy advises replacing with a dual MC, and we have all new NOS brake drums ready to go in. _________________ 1959 Single Cab “Otto”

how can I accurately measure my drums? My dial calipers only go to 6"!
I played with a tape measure, but that's not accurate at all. _________________ 1957 Beetle

A measuring tape will at least let you know if the drums are worn out. _________________ Don't worry; be happy. (Baba) |
