If it has over 100K on it, you most likely need a transmission. At about this time last year we had to source one for my wife's '02 1.8t Jetta.

Sadly, VW can't seem to make an automatic transmission that lasts.

do you have a local performance shop or trustworthy dealership near you? hook it up to a VAG-Com, the tech can check the TCM (transmission control module) and see if it's not reading correctly... that's a problem more common on passats, but the early mk4s suffer as well sometimes. the VAG-com should tell you almost exactly what the problem is. if it's the TCM just pull it out and search ebay, and vortex and match the part numbers exactly and you're good to go.

i know they go bad on passats because they are right under the passengers feet. if the sunroof drains back up and the car floods a little... guess what gets wet. im not sure where they are in a mk4 but it's a good place to start. my friend's wife just had this same sort of issue in her passat and the TCM was to blame. good luck
