PostPosted: Tue Jul 12, 2011 1:36 am    Post subject: Chroming Magnesium Rims? Anyone Done It? Reply with quote

Some of the earlier rims are either all magnesium or split with a steel hoop and magnesium center.. Im looking at chroming a set soon. My question is, I want to chrome the steel hooped set & magnesium centered rims..

Q1)Can this be done by any chrome shop.. or is there a specific talent that has to approach this??

Q2)Would these have to be taken apart from the rivets to do so? Or is it okay to just do the whole rim as is?

Thanks in advance fellas..

Okay.. Understood.. So how do these below get like this.. I beleive the hoops are metal and the center is magnesium right? Or is the star piece metal also on them and just the circular part magnesium? School me..

Steel is a type of metal.
Magnesium is a type of metal.
Brass is a type of metal.
Aluminum is a ....
......
....

You must separate the center from the hoops to rechrome.

Adamantium is a metal as well.. Your a wise man Bruce Bruce, and thats why you are still single, living in a Westy eating TV Dinners on the lakes of Canada....LOL.. Just kidding man.. Your brain has answered some of my questions many O time..

Let me clarify.. The hoops are steel.. Got it...They have to be separated from the center piece.. Are you familiar on how Mr.DaveM was able to get the center to have that look, in the photos above. Is it something that any chrome shop can do? John7 said that it would look like crap if the magnesium was chromed..

Those are original empi rader wheels and the center's are aluminum. I think it would be best to let us know what wheel you are dealing with first then we can determine if those wheel's you chose to use can be chromed. You can chrome magnesium hell they chrome plastic Wink You can't chrome all magnesium wheels such as original brm's as they are tooo porous but you can chrome an empi 5 spoke 2 peice wheel and the back's of those are magnesium it's been done already Wink

Those are Original empi rader wheels and there's not alot of people that can re-rivet them back together most people when putting them back together will use bolts but it's very expensive to get them re-done. The center's on them are aluminum so chroming them is not a big deal the problem is getting the right shop to put them back together so that they are safe to use again after the chroming has been done. No one like's to be rolling down the road and your wheel fall's apart on ya Shocked

Google "Eric Vaughn , Magnesium Wheels". He is doing my magnesium wheels this winter. I get checked for cracks, pores, and DOW coated. His service of doing polished magnesium wheels look far BETTER than chrome. Its just a shit load of work keeping them polished.

I would be afraid of chrome plated magnesium wheels but I'm no scientist.

Those were my old Empi raders

they are NOT magnesium. They are aluminum with steel outer hoops

David Mayes separated the rims and had the hoops redone, then refinished the wheels themselves

David actually did not do the work himself, he had a really good machinist friend who removed the original rivets that held the rims together. When he reassembled them he put a steel threaded insert where the rivet was once located, then bolted them back together like modern 3PC wheels you see today

Just got an update on Eric, may not be a good idea to call him after all.
