I have seen these for as low as $520. The Dometic and Waeco are the same brand. Just as Norcold and Engel are the same.

The Engel uses a reciprocating compressor that has been around for over 30 years and is very reliable. Whereas the Dometic uses a Danfoss compressor that has become popular since about 2005. The Danfoss is a newer technology that draws less power, is quieter and produces less vibration. We will have to check back in another 20-30 years to see if the Danfoss has the same reliability, however from what we've seen in the RV industry the Danfoss is on the right track.

Even though there are people that like the Engel more in the following forum the second guy on this thread went for the Dometic/Waeco for the same reasons that I have chosen them. In the end its hard to say which one really is better and I don't think that you can go wrong with either brand.

Thanks CanaSync,

that was very helpful. the reason i wanted to look elsewhere is the Engel is crazy spendy and i have a connection through Dometic where i should be able to get the item at cost.

ill post more when i have pricing from them.

Thanks

While you are at it, how about checking into the CR-1050 and CR-1065 fridges?

For Vanagon campers, of course. The smaller one is the Dometic version of the Vitrifrigo and Truckfridge that many people install to replace the stock Westy fridges. The larger one needs more work to go in but might be worth the trouble.

I have had experiences with both Norcold and Dometic.

I used an MT45 Norcold for several years in my Jeep, Landcruiser and other vehicles. From MX to MT it never failed, and ran daily for 2 years when we lived in LA.

I sold the Engel to upgrade to a larger fridge with a family of four. I bought a used Dometice 80L, the kind that can freeze/fridge or be a fridge only. Now, mind you it was used, but I still expected the fridge to work properly, and from the moment I got it, the compressor wouldnt cycle. After having the local RV place look at it, and several calls to customer support at Dometic, the problem was determined to be a bad circuit board causing a failure.

Not acceptable in my opinion, considering the environments I had taken my Engel through.

After doing a bit of reading, especially on the various different Australian boards, the Dometic/Waecos have had issues with electronic in the past, and while vastly improved, they still have minor annoyances.

If you are looking for a good quality, lower cost option, the Dometic will work for you, but do your research.

If you are buying on price point only, check out Whynter fridges.

I'll be going with an Engel again. Heck, maybe even a National Luna.

It says something about the Engels that you can buy a 20 year old fridge that works just fine, if just in need of some love on the outside. Those Sawafuji compressors are top notch.

I had the opposite experience going from a Vitro Frigo to an Engel. The engel makes less noise and less vibration and I think it uses less power, but I haven't measured consumption on either for a 24 hour period...

The VF would also warm up a little inside in hot weather where the engle always stays at the set temp and has no problem freezing a fridge full of food to below 0* F when you accidentally roll the knob to "freeze" when you care cleaning it Embarassed

I don't like the top loader though and will be getting a 60 quart front loader from engel when I have the dough...

Jack,

You might check this out instead of dropping the dough on a 60L.
