I bought new struts inserts for the front of my Super Beetle and it is TIGHT. I can't get it to move at all. Is this normal? It concerns me because I don't think it is even possible to compress the spring enough to install the bearing stuff on the strut. They are just new Monroe. |

The strut cartridge protrusion part, I guess you can call it. The bit that moves up a down, returns things to its original position. |

Do you have a set of spring compressors? |

Stasher, yeah, some Craftsmen, but the thing is, it's so low I would have to completely compress the spring, and even then, I'm not sure if it would fit. I'll take a pic when I get home.
I think I'll but the bearing housing stuff together and bring it to a local shop to worry about. |

It sounds like you need to completely remove teh strut from the car and replace the inserts on a bench. Use the compressors withthe parts out from under the car. It should work fine. This will allow you to hook up the tops parts properly. I wonder if you should do a "How To" search _________________ 79 super Vert

OK, here's what I'm talking about. I don't think, even fully compressed, the top of the strut cartridge would be out enough to attach the bearing housing, and I find it impossible to move these new strut cartridges out. |

Strut cartridges are typically shipped compressed, and some brands may even be held in that position with things like safety wire or clips. These apparently have no safety wire, so have you tried "unscrewing" the shaft by using a slotted screwdriver in the end? |

You'll have to find out why those piston rods won't move. They should move up and down fairly easy. After you discover that, you won't have any problems _________________ 79 super Vert

What did you find out about the strut rods. Were they threaded for shipping or something else _________________ 79 super Vert

Haven't tried anything flyboat. I'll definitely check when I get home because I need to put them back on like right now |

Stasher, that was the ticket! I used a screwdriver to twist it about a quarter turn, and they popped right up. Now I probably don't even need a spring compressor. My brother can push the spring down enough for me to cap it. |
