Can some post pictures of a single carb on engine with front and both side views? Or even have links. I'm not sure if mine is hooked up correcty with vacum and electric wires. I need a starting point to make idle adjustments.

Thanks

Yes it doe's. It looks like the vacum from the dist goes to the front of the carb. On the drivers side of carb, there is another vacum line, is it plugged, or where does it connect to? Mine just has a open line that is not plugged.

As long as you have the correct distributor that is. Should have two vacuum lines coming off your distributor can. One on each side.

The hose connected the side of the carb connects the the port facing away from the distributor (outboard)

The hose connected to the rear of the carb is connected to the port closest to the distributor (inboard)

The stock 181 carburetor will have 3 vacuum connections:

one on the driver's side near the idle adjustment screws for vacuum advance (advances timing for part throttle operation - long and short, improves mpg) - this will connect to the rear side (rear being rear of the vehicle) of the distributor vacuum advance (or the side that is not closest to the distributor body),

another on the rear slightly on the driver's half for vacuum retard (rear being rear of the vehicle - the vacuum retard only operates at idle and is intended to retard the timing to burn the mixture more cleanly for emissions purposes) - this connects to the front of the vacuum canister if the vacuum canister has provisions for it (the side closest to the distributor body - factory used a green hose for this),

and the final vacuum port is at the rear, base of the carburetor on the passenger side coming up at a 45 degree angle for controlling the EGR valve (EGR valve is the ufo looking thing - only operates at part throttle to mix inert exhaust gases back into the intake to reduce the formation of NOx - acid raining causing pollution) - this does not connect to the distributor.

Other carburetors will have different combinations of vacuum provisions from none (military 181 and bay window buses with suppressed ignition) up to 4 or 5 for certain autostick beetles and ghias with emission controls.

portraitmac: I don't think any stock 181 carb came with dual throttle arms, but just in case: What is the part number on the little metal tag? Stock carbs start with 181. If it 181 part number I would be interested to know what the flange number is (found on the driver side of the carb near the throttle arm at the base of the carburetor).

citroen: I love looking at your engine compartment. I hope mine ends up looking that clean when I get done with my 1600 rebuild and get my a/c in place.

OK here is my carb. I only have one vac on dist and it goes to front of carb. The vac on drivers side of carb is open. I hope to find out the correct vac lines to make it run smooth.
I think it is an Solex 30, Should I replace to a Solex 34?

the single advance hose goes to the left side where you have a open hole you do not need the front 2 on the carb with the single advance

Thanks to all, esp to citroen. Once vac was changed, bypass cut-off, and choke fixed, idle adjustment was easy. Now to take on a test drive tomorrow after work. Not enough hours in a day Smile

SilverThing - I'm sorry I took so long to see your question. I have since had the carb rebuilt so the metal tag is gone. However, I was able to read it in the original photo...141 129031. There is one more character at the end of the number. I can't tell if it is a 0 (zero) or G. So, not 181, sorry. I can see the other number you asked about, on the flange. On the driver's side, it is VW 326_2 and on the passenger side it is B1 165.

Those numbers would make the carburetor a '72 Manual Transmission Karmann Ghia I believe.

Do you know what distributor went with it originally?

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5695407#5695407
suggested either 113905205AJ or 113905205AN (for 326_1 or 326_3)

Can you offer any insights?

Tom
