I am preparing to exchange engines between two buses, so I have the opportunity to do all those nice things that are most easily done with the engine(s) out of the vehicle. These are both 2.0-L FI engines. -- one is a keeper, and the other I don't care so much about, but it will end up in a running bus.

I know this has been discussed, but Search is not helping me find it. Perhaps it was an article somewhere... ? If anyone recalls, I'd appreciate a link.

Here's what I have thought of, so far:

- exhaust refurb (I probably need the whole kit and kaboodle)
- clean up tin and get it screwed in right
- replace front seal and O-ring
- replace clutch disc, throwout bearing, and pressure plate
- service CV joints if necessary
- clean engine and engine room, of course

Any other recommendations?

Replace all fuel lines and hose clamps.

While in there, replace the engine compartment ceiling particle / saw dust & glue drooping panels and FG bags that are so call noise deadner and use real PUF foam with alum foil instead. Wink

I find that happens to me a lot here. Saw some good information somewhere, and can't find it. The FAQ page below has a lot of info on "Service to perform while the engine's removed". Scroll down to the "Engine" section.

Good luck with the engine swap, and the tasks associated.

John - depending on the condition of the motor, you probably want to start with a compression test and a leakdown test. Sometimes it is worthwhile to retorque the heads if there is any sign of loosening. If I have the tin off I usually bring the case bolts up to the minimum listed if any have loosened. The tin will often have cracks in it, and this is a good time to tig the cracks and repaint it. All the rubber should be replaced if you can find it. Do the injector seals and manifold boots etc. Check all the FI items for the specs listed and replace anything questionable.
