You can also use a small flathead screw/nut to secure them also. Makes replacement pretty easy |
Yup! that's how i've been doing it as well. |
I may use some poprivets so the nuts can't loosen up. _________________ 1963 Ragtop Bug |

I have been doing this for several years now. I built a tool for riveting clips in place, and I no longer use it. A box of 100 6-32 x 3/8" machine screw is about three bucks. A box of 6-32 nylon stop nuts is about five bucks. The screws I have are Phillips head. _________________ nothing |

I needed to replace 15 clips on 3 rims .
this is what I did to replace them in 1 1/2 hours
I used this air tool to grind off the old rivets
I picked up this tool for my air hammer price 20 bucks
I used this ball joint tool to hold the rivet in place
Presto chango
I hope this helps _________________ _______________________ |

I'm ordering the tool now as yesterdays install was a long frustrating yet successful mess. Mess because I thought the clip needed to be adjusted like the remaining clips were and I pushed the clip very little and it broke near the rivet. What did I do wrong besides try to bend it? Can I assume I just attach it to the wheel and it will be fine to hold the hubcap? Because it broke with little pressure (I'm a gal and not that strong) can I assume it is hardened steel which is why it broke?
Yesterday sucked today will be better

Me too! Just make sure the head of your flat head tapered screw is completely flush with the contact surface of your rim. For the few I've done I usually lightly grind down any high spots on the screw heads "if" they stick up any. I just used flat top tapered head machine screws with small Nylock nuts the other day to fix an original clip that broke when removing a hub cap for brake adjustment service.
I've used my WW tool and the rivets also in the past, but I too was not so happy with the smaller diameter of the shaft of the WW rivets. I'd like to discover and get the proper rivets that fit snug into the rim hole and still crush properly. Anyone figure out a source for those?

Yes Bruce Amacker, I do have air, that looks like a very cool technique.
