I just pick up a 68 bug that has a stuttering sunroof. It opens 3 inches and stops...I have not forced it. Are there diagrams showing how the sunroof actually operates?? How many cables-what direction they move??? Any hlp would be awsome.......

It sounds to me like you've got either a worn drive gear, or a worn (or missing) drive gear shim. That is asuming that it doesn't pull to one side or the other...which could still mean damaged gear, but more likely is a worn (stripped), or broken cable.
There are 2 cables, and they basicly move front to rear...then wrap around the front of the hole and down the other side!! hahahaha!!!
When the roof is open as far as you dare, look into the top of the opening...at the front is the plastic gearbox cover. Open it up and take a look at the gear...that will at least give you a starting point.

I need to do the same with one of my cars tonight. I always assumed it was operated by magic beans or something...
