Congratulations to Brit in becoming the very first air-cooled VW to gain entry into the Utah Salt Flats Racing Association's '130mph club'! Also, on being the single fastest Ghia on the salt this week!
The USFRA has these entry level class for fully licensed, registered and insured street vehicles called 130mph and 150mph club.
The Geoff Hart Racing engine was still warm, when Brit threw me the keys and said, "hey, go have some fun". And fun it was... from the mandatory sub-100mph 'calibration pass' that felt great, then back-to-back 138.25mph, then 138.75mph passes, the Ghia performed flawlessly, handled is if it were on a string.
I'm now the second driver to gain 130mph Club status in an air-cooled VW.
Big thanks to Brit for affording me the opportunity to jump in the Bonneville Ghia, and also gain entry in the 130mph club on the salt this week! What a thrill, thanks again, pal! Big thanks to buddy Greg Urrutia, for crewing for me, friend Geoff Hart and his bud Matt for building a stump-puller of an engine, that needed almost no tuning. BTW, that engine had more in it, I saw 141mph on the GPS at .8 miles and pedaled it as to not get disqualified for going through the traps at over 140. It could have easily gone 145plus if I stayed in it
One car, one day, one engine, two drivers in the record books should also be some sort of record... thanks again, Brit! |
and just think, if Saturday didn't get rained out I'm sure the Blackline boys would have got in the 130 club with Britts engine in there car. Now that would have been something. 2 cars, 1 engine, 3 new 130 club members _________________ Stocking distributor of "The Funky Green Panels"

Ronnie's "mark" as he unloaded
Tom's 126 mph Turbo 36 Hp Bug.
My Camp until it rained too hard Friday night, then I wrangled some floor space in Burly's room.

Saturday morning the event was cancelled due to rain so we all met up to watch Blackline remove my engine which they'd just spent an all nighter to install. Give credit to Justin and Colton, they left nothing on the table. Next year they will be a force to be recconned with

Great pics Britt. I am glad you finally found time to slow down a little bit and do a little sight seeing and picture taking.
One question. The photo with the Bonneville Ghia in tow is somewhat of an oxymoron what with a license plate that announces the "LSRGHIA" and a tow sign saying "SLOW MOVING VEHICLE" ! That certainly wasn't the Grannis/Hart Ghia this year!
And congatulations again for being both the fastest air cooled VW at the WOS and the 1st VW air cooled 130 Mile Per Hour Club member.
See you down the road................

Thanks Steve, it means allot coming from you. I hope to get down there next year with Burly and Todd from Canada ( who's been before I believe). I may not be able to ship a car over in 2012 but maybe 2013. _________________ 71 Westy Roadcow

Well I've sold the Bonneville Ghia to a friend in Ireland less engine. The engine is staying in the US. I wanted to thank everyone who has supported me in my efforts to play at Bonneville. 2012 will be my attempt to get into the "1" club with a 36hp based engine. I'll start another thread when my ducks are all in a row with the new project. _________________ 71 Westy Roadcow

Looking forward to seeing the new project I was going to ask you about the muffler on the Ghia. What is it???? Looks like a lot of guys are going to mufflers and not just for sound suppression.
