|
|
OK, this is probably beyond crazy, but I'm trying to locate what was once my first new car, a '71 bus. What would distinguish this bus is that I installed a Westy interior in 1972. There are no louvered windows, nor did I change the top. The bus was originally purchased in Hartford, CT, so the M Code should show an East Coast origin. It was last seen in South Gate, CA (LA suburb), where a dealer had changed the original Chianti Red to a horrible road-stripe yellow color. I'm working on obtaining a VIN #. If anyone thinks they've seen, or might even own this bus, speak out! |

Hi, I read an article about a guy who did the same thing you are doing, the way he got the VIN and license number was through his insurance agent. The insurance company still had the information on file. You may want to check old photos and see if you captured the license number. He did find the vehicle but the new owners did not want to sell it. Good Luck |

He got pretty far, then. I have a license plate number from the only existing photo of the bus, a photo I only found recently. Right now I'm on the phone with the CT DMV (have been on hold 40 minutes and still waiting for a live person) hoping they can track a 1971 plate and help me turn it into a VIN#.
The insurance idea is a good one, but in those days I only occasionally had insurance and wouldn't remember which companies had the coverage, since I usually only went with cheapo unknown companies.

living here in CT, i can tell you for a fact you are (sadly) wasting your time. the dmv will not give up any info. did you call the 800 number, or a local branch? IF you were going to get any help from those assholes, i would call the old saybrook branch, they have been the most helpful dmv i ever visited (take that at face value)

It's not that they're being assholes, they're complying with Federal Driver Privacy Laws. I deal with them everyday, you can't just go giving out someone else's personal information because some other random person asked for it. _________________ First Trip in the RustyBus:

i understand, but you will not get a 'sorry sir, we simply cannot help' in a friendly, compassionate tone. instead, you will get a 'pfft, IF we could do that, why we we help you' seriously, they hire monotone, asshole robots at the CT DMV.
what the hell is up with all the 'how can i find my bug/bus/ghia/ex girlfriend' threads lately? everyone having sellers remorse _________________

Yeah, 35 years later Funny that I don't pine at all for the Landcruiser I traded it in on. Thanks for the Old Saybrook tip; I'll give it a shot. |

Tried the Old Saybrook office, but their phone # now just transfers automatically to the main state number and I already know how unhelpful they are, but I guess that's the nature of the DMV in most any state. |
