Wow 4 Hours scrubbing down the Pop Top.. Definite improvement, but still gonna paint it. Just don't know what to do about the fibers. Rubbing the top feels like I'm petting a ferret. Pic doesn't do the hair justice.. Some spots were smooth, especially on the corners. What do I do, sand the hair off, or just leave it hairy? Want the paint job to look good..

go to the boat store. someplace like westmarine and get the interloux topside boat primer and paints. I think I have also seen some boat paints at homeydeopt made by rustoleum.

The interloux does magic on old boats.

My top was quite fuzzy, it certainly sucked when your forearm would brush up against it Evil or Very Mad , but some 220 grit and some interlux paint and it looked a million times better, the only problem was that it made the rest of the van look kind of crappy :-/

Sand off the hair, then prime and paint with interlux, you won't have any trouble, all the details are in the thread I linked in my last post Very Happy

another fix, is scuff it, and recoat the top with gel coat, which you can probably get from a place that sells marine stuff or possible even a paint store like sherwin williams

either way pull the glass top off completely so you can do it, when I get the title for my bus this is one of the first things I'm doing even before getting a motor, anything I can do to keep water out of it

Hey bad van,

You should have continued this with the other thread you have going about your top. It would be easier for everyone to follow the progress you make or process you go through to get from A to Z, rather than looking through several threads.

Thanks GMByers. Actually thinking about that before I started this thread. Pretty new to thesamba, I'll figure it out. Just don't know what to do after I paint the pop top... this thread, my other thread, or make another new one?

by the way thesamba is awesome... the VW family is like no other

My top looked like yours. I didn't sand at all. The interlux primer filled it in nicely and the paint went down well too.

I used a brush, where clearly the way to do it is with a foam roller, that looks really nice HTV!

Nice top... You did that with a roller! Wondering if I can get away with painting it without removing the top, looks like you took the top off and lots of comments on the subject recommend that. Gonna paint mine Sunday. Damn a roller.. I was going to try spraying the top but I'm not the best using it or with the additives that need to go into the gun.. retarder reducer thinner. Roller seems much easier and it looks great.

yep definitely use the dense foam roller. It may look like it's leaving lines when you roll it but they'll settle out. Actually I painted my top while it was still on the van. The luggage rack was off however as I was in the process of dismantling the whole thing. Just hang plastic under the edge and you'll be fine.

I used Pentrol about three years ago and it helped immensely but the top now needs another application due to chalking again.
