Thanks.
Speaking of Jeff, his 55 Kombi came back for some engine tuning, final suspension tweaks and electrical works.
It now sports a set of our blinking semaphore bulbs, led dome light bulbs, and all of the lights are now working.
Check out the semaphores here - http://tinyurl.com/blinkybulbs |

Current customer car in the works in Dave's '56 Single Cab
I had it in the shop a few years ago for suspension work. It sat for a bit, bounced between a couple metal repair shops. Now it's back for engine, rubber, electrical, glass, etc.

I had some issues the engine that came with the BD. Oil leaks, etc. I pulled that engine out and I am in the process of putting a 2276cc together. So I towed the BD home to get it out of my way while I put that together. That was in the beginning of October......
Looking at the BD everyday, seeing the rust and knowing I had the metal to repair it, that seemed like to right next step to take, so Jan 1st I pulled out all the metal that came with the bus and made a plan.
Doors and glass were removed, a few more pieces of metal ordered, and we got started.
Some things went smooth, others did not.
The more we dug, the more issues were found
Current state has the nose mocked up while we wait for new front floor sections, passenger side B pillar, and a driver side dogleg. I figure if I'm going this far I might as well do it all.
The nose is going on the wall, the rest is going in the scrap pile.

We took some time last week to reverse a drop job for a local friend.
Before -
6" beam, hybrid spindles, Porsche pattern brakes, notched spring plates, 4.5's and 5.5's with 125's and 195/65/15's
After -
Stock beam, stock spindles, stock brakes, stock spring plates, stock two toned wheels, Firestone 5.60/15 bias ply tires.
The hardest part was getting the color for the wheels mixed
L 381 sea green
L 286 turquoise white |

More work on the 54 Barndoor door as well.
The metal on the underside is just about done -
Rear floor has been fit and drilled for plug welds -
and the decklid / prop has been sorted. I used a later prop and cut it down a bit to give myself "maximum lift" for an easier time once it's sitting back on the ground.
I have a stock rod set a side in case I need it later. |

Yesterday I started prepping the new trans for install.
I have found this set up works great with low pro tires (under 25") to keep freeway speeds up and RPM's down. You need a lot of HP though, this is not for 1600cc powered VW's.
As stated above I'll be running a 2276cc in the barndoor (+/- 110hp) so climbing hills while loaded won't be a problem.
This is the standard set up I use in all of my personal cars.
3.44 R&P
All new Weddle gears, stock 1st and 2nd, Bus 3rd and either a .77 or .82 4th depending on tire size.
SuperDiff
HD side cover
welded gears
etc.

In order to push the barndoor with that 3.44 / .82 trans we need some power.
My standard "go to" engine is a 2276cc with IDA's. For no reason other than they work for me.
No exception this time around.
Luckily I had a bunch of misc. pieces around from other engine builds, some dress up bits from an engine swap in my wife's car, etc. so it went together pretty smooth.
New aluminum case.
Scat 82mm crank
Mahle Forged 94mm piston and cylinders
44 x 37.5 heads matched ported to the intakes
SLR VX298 Cam
SLR lifters
Autocraft 1.4 ratio rockers
9.3:1 complression
Italian IDA's sitting on tall intakes with tall stacks and all the other IDA bells and whistles
Berg linkage
MSD ignition
Sidewinder exhaust
Full flowed case
30mm oil pump
Filter and mount will be added once it's on the stand
Just in time to as the metal work should be finishing up here real soon. The last bits from Gerson arrived last week. |

Long time no posts...
Anyone who was at Kelley Park saw his Double Door Walk thru 23 window I'm sure.
I've done a lot of work for the owner in the past and he asked me to handle the Slam-O-Matic on this one for him.
Details here - http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=230532
50% done
99% done
100% done and heading home.

We stay busy doing mail order drop jobs as well.
4" beam, raised center pin, modify lower shock mounts, flipped spindles, new shocks, new link pins, new steering dampener, new narrowed tie rods.
Bolt it on and go!! |

We also have a couple longer term full deal cars we're working on.
Some custom
Some stock
I even found some time to work on one of my own buses...
Sort out a new (better) front end for my wife's thing.
3" narrowed, dropped spindles, Wilwood disks.
And build an RC WalMart bus to chase my son around
(very short video)

Here's a quick drop job I did on a '63 Single Cab
Wham bam, thank you ma'am.
This was a no-nonsense Slam-O-Matic job with a 4" beam and 4" drop plates added.
We've all seen a drop job in detail, so I won't show that, just the highlights.
Pre-build everything so there's no waiting on parts.
Out with the old...
Decide where you want it to sit, do your math, and set it up once.
When it's done, roll it outside, take pictures and get started on the next one.

54 Behr Scoop Kombi - http://lowbus.com/BB/index.php?topic=1555.0
I bought this BD Kombi a year or so ago, it needed some help and some attention to detail to get it sorted out.
I was gung-ho to fix everything that was wrong and leave it as a stock bus.
I started by color matching a set of bumpers and the scoop. I also installed correct splash pans.
Up next was the dash pod. Not only was the chrome unit replaced with a color matched piece, but the wiring was repaired as well.
After that, I installed a nice reliable 1500cc
Now that was a driver, I bought a set of repop BD rear seats and had them covered and installed them.
I got to this point and stopped. Having been under, over, inside and outside of the bus I was happy with it, but it did nothing what so ever for me. I never drove it, I'd lost interest in it, I plain and simply didn't care for it at all.
Through a couple turn of events, I ended up with an extra BD suspension with 4 wheel disks and a 2276cc engine, so here we are...
I have a few details to sort out in the engine compartment before it'll be back on the road, but it suits me now.

I've been working on relocating the tank, extending the filler neck, and modifying the spare tire tray, before I paint the engine bay and install the 2276cc IDA engine I built for the Portuguese bus awhile back.

Lastly (for now) is this sweet 57 vert I picked up for a car to cruise this summer.
My buddy Jeff had it listed for MONTHS with no serious buyers, so I grabbed it. Drove 2 hrs to his place and drove it home.
Color matching the fender beading and running board mats, replacing some rubber bits, and adding a few accessories are the only things on my to-do list for this one.
Mats
Abarth exhaust swap
Accessories
