The engine has some nice things bolted to it. I'm going to take it apart, powder coat it, and fix some of the incorrect things. The rear breast plate for example. If the dual carbs stay then I'm going to change the rear tin to one with no intake holes.

Trying really hard to have it ready. It needs an accelerator pedal rebuild. It's sticking. Also have to get the title straightened. The Maryland title he had had the wrong VIN. The number weren't even close, and there were extra numbers. He's going to the DMV to fix that this week, but I don't know how long that will take.

Also have to learn Dual 34s. I've never had a car that was anything but stock.

Mike, your Thing and you showing it to her in Culpepper sold her on one. Smile

Actually I understand completely. I went to the BugOut last year and saw a few Things. I was hooked! By the end of September I had bought mine.

However in my case my wife thought I was crazy. She did not want it. Now she loves it.

OK, I'll bite.... What's with the tag "72 VW"? Was that from a build date but registered as a '73? It has the later elephant foot lights(showing it's not an early bus light Euro car, yet it has the slits-'73(instead of mufffs-'74).....
Could this be confusion from the titling issue? Seems odd that the numbers were So far off. Almost like a title from a Different car!??(yikes)
Curiosity was getting me, I had to ask.
Or was this a "throw an old tag on it just to get it home" situation? LOL!
My investigative juices are flowing. I can't look past inconsistancies.

Thing looks pretty solid, by the way. You can even see through the side curtains, AND back window! Bonus! LOL

My wife saw a freshly done , Tangerine metal flake (tiny flake) '74 in SEVWA's Greensboro show in May and really liked them. I kinda never paid much attention to them, but when a wife likes a car in your hobby, that is s signal to buy one.

I now think the '73 we have is my favorite car to drive out of over 100 VW's I have owned.

I have noticed the Thing is like Dale Earnhardt with a woman, they either love them or hate them. I got lucky and it sounds like you did too.

Actually the answer is much more simple and stupid. It's a dead tag off of my old 72 Super my wife put on it so she could take it for a spin.

The side curtains are glass in front with sliders, and plastic in the rear. The top canvas is pretty new. It has some rust, and the doors were pop riveted at the bottom and bondoed over. I'm going to replace the full floors at some point. Nothing too hateful, and again, a great price.

LOL.... Simple enough!
That paint is going to look awesome once all that oxidation is removed! Most POs' get PO'd when they see results like that After they sell(usually at lesser price than if they'd taken the time to detail the car!)

Great looking Thing, And you get to drive it already!!!!

Sean:

Had the same thing with my car. The paint looked terrible - heavily oxidated and faded. I compounded, polished and waxed the car. It looked completely different. Gives you a good feeling when you can get a quick win like that.

I was always taught a clean and waxed car always looks better than one that isn't. Why would you not clean and wax a car if you are going to sell it? Oh well his loss is your gain.

Since its a '73 does it have heat exchangers or the gas heater?

It had a gas heater that is missing.

It's going to need to be painted. Someone liked bondo way too much and it's very clearly visible. Luckily, all she cares is that it runs, the top goes down, and it "goes fast". She's happy it has dual weber 34s because it'll be faster then my Ghia.

Found this picture printed and in a folder of docs for her car. Went to the URL and it's still an active link.

We knew it was from Hawaii, but it's neat to have a pic of it while it was there.

Is that On Hawaii?? I didn't think they did stick built houses with shingles and chimneys. All islands i've been on have been concrete/block with tin or tile capping it off.
I did notice the HI tag.. Souvenier maybe? LOL!
Just thinking again, dangit...Wink
