I went back to the F.L.A.P.S. to have them charge the battery, as they do it for free. Left it while I went on an errand, and came back to be told it would not hold a charge, and in half hour went from 10.5 volts to eight volts. Said it had to be replaced, and asked for a quote. They must have changed there policy, as the first two years it is replaced for free. So got a July of this year battery for free! Got a chance to put it in the Squareback this night, doing it all by feel, as could not see where the flashlight was!
Got in, primed the system, but would not stay running unless the starter was engaged. But, was not running rough like last time so think the battery was already bad. So, kept my foot in it and starter engaged, and the engine speed started increasing. Let the key go, but died. Repeated it again, but waited until engine speed was even higher, then let go. To keep it alive, had to nurse it, and will die if I do not keep the throttle open more. Once it died after the initial start up, only took one crank to start. Went for a short drive to get a better idea of things, and got good at clutch, throttle, ignition and shifter in a pattern to start it up and get moving. However, once moving it is fine it seems. Feels good to be driving it again, and will have to make more time for her.
In sort, to start, pressure has to be up, then couple pumps of the throttle, open the throttle all the way, engage starter, and as comes to life, feather the throttle. Oh, and on first start up, smelled real bad, then was faint, but still smells. I am thinking bad gasoline, idle speed and T.P.S. in that order. What do you all think I need to check? _________________ Please consider I am Autistic, so I process information differently and still working on social skills. Thanks.

As always, start with the ignition system. Sounds like a classic case of fouled plugs. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

1 and 3 spark plugs were loose, the thread and the electrode on 2 was fouled, 1 and 3 tan and 4 white. So changed the one but acts the same and have to leave by 3:00 P.M. so really thinking of towing it as I am getting frustrated. |
take it from me A-- when you get frustrated you dont think clearly.
Tram's right -- sounds like fouled plugs, but could also be a problem anywhere in the ignition. pretend you DIDNT just check everything, start over with the VOM, and walk yourself through the steps.
turn the key on, and make sure you've got 12V to the coil.
open the dist. cap and verify point gap
static time the distributor
now you have two options here -- REPLACE the plugs (I know you abhor replacing a "good" part, but you might just save yourself a headache. worst case, you have a set of spares right? plugs arent expensive.)
or remove, clean and re-install. remember to tighten down but not strip, and use anti-seize.
now try to crank the motor over, and see what happens.
edit* sounds stupid, but triple check your plug order -- the color being all over the place indicates to me maybe they're firing off time. _________________ 71 Squareback-FI -- 73 Bay (subaru powered)

Joe! Long time no see! Thank you!
First day I have had some clarity as that class and now moving is killed or killing the brain.
I will go through it after lunch, but can tell you once it starts it is smoother than it has been in a long time, a wild cat purr. _________________ Please consider I am Autistic, so I process information differently and still working on social skills. Thanks.
