Alright, yep the bendable stuff looks easier. Joel, how much did you end up buying and using? Going to have to figure out how to get the headliner up there too.

Very cool Shepherdsond, do you have any photos of the area above your windows? Looks like you're putting in cleats, what are you going to build there.

I bought a roll of 4' X 50', and the actual name is Prodex. I know I miss spelled it previously, sorry. This quantity is probably enough to do two vans, so adjust your order accordingly. I just know I'll be using a lot of this stuff, so I bought extra.

Note: the only negative I've found with using this product is that there are some subtle waves in the foil. Probably just a result of the manufacturing process. Anyway, those subtle waves do telegraph through the headliner when all is done. Not bad, and I can live with it. You can see some of the waves in my photos.

Best of luck, keep us posted as to how it works out. Joel

Matt,
This is the area above the window, the top strip is to screw the LED lights into (the lights will of course be attached on top of the headliner when it is in) and the lower strip which is just above the window is for a curtain track. I have epoxied all sorts of bits of wood like this in any place where I think I might want to attach something in the future (like netting pockets for example). I have also glued some thin plywood strips (you can see them in my last post) to the roof in case I want a curtain hanging down to block off the top space for warmth. The plywood is 1/2" like the insulation so it should not show when the headliner is in. I am working slow, I keep thinking of new things! I have not decided yet whether to put in a forward bulkhead to make the front into a cupboard (I would have to remove a window to get it in).

In terms of quantity I purchased 5 sheets of Microcell foam (Full Sheet 60" x 72" x 1/2"). These were cut down to 4'x4' to reduce shipping. I tried to get some locally to avoid shipping but prices were much higher. It ended up at about $200 and I think I will have quite a bit left over.

Jedi,
You have probably posted this somewhere but if so I missed it. Did you convert your AW interior to a Westy? Best of both worlds in my opinion, very nice.

Hi Jedi. What is the total height of your van? Do you know how much taller the AW top is compared to a Westfalia poptop? Thanks.

Thanks for the reminder nuhu, I need to get the ladder out and measure mine after the lift so I know what I can and can't fit under. I believe I'm pushing 9 or 10 feet right now.

BTW, Thanks Shepard and Joel for answering my questions. Joel what are you using as a headliner? I need to order a roll and then some because this spring after the lighting and the insulation go in, I'm going to line the top and the van. I was looking at marine carpets (without backing) but I'm still shopping around.

Hello Matt,
I used a product that goes by several names, but you can find it called Flexform or Ozite. It comes in many shades and colors. With all the contours these various tops have, I found you need an extremely light and flexible material. This stuff comes in 80 inch wide sheets, so I was able to stretch it and end up with almost no seams, and it hugged all the angles and soft corners. It's kind of a fuzzy stuff, a lot like a trunk liner or the stuff they put on bass boxes or audio speakers. I was cautioned by all the upholstery shops I asked to keep the roof material as light possible so it wouldn't fall down over time. So this stuff was about as light as I found.

BTW, the Prodex insulation ran about $50 for the hole top.

Hot damn, I just dropped a wad on new CVs so $50 doesn't sound so bad. Thanks for the pointer to Ozite/Flexform. I was out in the van this afternoon considering the difficulty of installing anything in that space (above my head).

Matt,
FYI this is what I am using as a headliner http://www.perfectfit.com/15593/154092/Marine-Carpet-and-Hulliner/Hulliner-and-Headliner-72.html it is sold as headliner/hull liner. It is light (not like carpet) although I don't have an oz/yd weight (the Ozite is 18oz/yard). It has a kind of fuzzy texture that I am not too keen on but it is very stretchy. I have not installed it yet.

As more and more tops get into circulation, more and more folks are doing some nice installations of accessories.
These pics are of a solar panel that has been installed on a top on a syncro.

A couple of pics of the interior of a hightop as finished by Joel Lane. The van owners are currently on their first long distance cruise with the van.
Front bulkhead, LED lights, strutted access door to front storage.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

This pic shows the bed extension in the upright position. Joel has developed a latch/lock to hold the extension in the upright position to secure all of the "stuff" while on the road.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

You can also see the power vent - quite nice to change the air in the van quickly.
