Posted: Tue Aug 16, 2011 6:24 pm Post subject: What did you haul on your roof rack today? |
|
|
I figured there are threads for "whats the most youve hauled in your single cab" and "whats the most youve hauled in your panel" and "what did you do with your bus today".
So why not a what did you haul on your rack, or whats the most youve hauled on your rack thread. Be neat to see what people can actually get up there and safely from point A to point B.
I have one of chads (ezcamper) roof racks out of FL. HWE style, never existed version. He sent me the kit and i welded it up. I use it for everything and anything you can imagine. That was why i got it.
Well on this trip i went to a coleman collectors campout and so i had all my lanterns and stoves for my display inside my bus (18 lanterns/12 stoves). Along with ice chests, EZup, 3 folding tables, extra fuel, spares, my fold up bed thats made into my bus, box of dry goods, fire pit, all my cast iron cookware etc.
Well you cant camp without firewood and i wanted to try out my new stihl MS311 saw.
So the plan was to put the wood on the rack.
We dumped a HUGE cedar (40 inch base) and diced it up. The largest rounds i put up front weighed roughly 60 lbs each on the scale when i got back to vegas. Thats after they dried on the rack for 7 days roughly.
So we figured i had between 600 and 800 lbs on the rack. Id guess closer to the higher number. Bottom line is the bus was the most loaded ive ever had it. In certain spots the control arms would hit the front stops. I drove it this way from cassel CA all the way back to vegas.
With a stop at north fork campground of course for 4 days of camping.
Yes theres a road there...
Yes theres a bus back in there. I cleared the ancient road for 4 hours to get to the cedar we wanted.
the forest FTW
German truck, german saw.
You can see how slammed it is right here, lol. The lowest my bus will ever go...
So thats what my rack has done recently. _________________ Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.

Funny in this picture it looks like someone photoshopped the beer out of the guy in the grey shirt's hand.

Had this ^^^on the roof rack.
Then parted out a 59 SC and a mango standard in the back woods. It got more squatty. Drove ~ 5-600 miles home.

Not all on the roof rack but 2197 pounds of vw parts total!!
2 engine cases
2 sets of pistons and cylinders
10 heads
6 flywheels
3 sets of rods
4 fan shrouds plus misc tin
4 cranks
1 turn key engine
2 transmissions
5 header systems
4 mufflers (on rack)
6 crates of misc bug parts
all the tools I own
1 compressor
2 windshields
9 Porsche fuchs with tires (on rack)
2 full 5 gallon gas cans (were on rack but took them off before pic)
2 clothes baskets full of clothes
1 car battery
1 silk screen machine
1 welder
1 weight set
a bunch of kitchen/bbq stuff
3 sets of door panels
2 convertible tops
1 vert rear window
some yard tools
1 mop and bucket with ringer (industrial type)
2 interior kits
and my fat ass!!!
Usually I get 29 mpg, but surprisingly it still got 26mpg at 55mph the whole 8.5 hours!
I put more on the rack but there was only 1 inch of room between the top of the tire and the wheel well so some stuff had to come off. I bottomed out MULTIPLE times on the way and it was like hitting a brick wall!
I made it up the grapevine at 35mph and got up to 65 on the way down but I could not stop. Fun times.
Next trip included but no pics
4 complete doors (on rack)
6 fenders
1 hood
other random sheet metal clips (on rack)
2 transmissions (on rack)
2 core engines
MOVING SUCKS! |

Cool thread topic. I wish I had pics of some of my past roof rack hauls, but they happened long ago. I have not done a major roof rack pile in several years. _________________ nothing |
