Okay, after reading all the posts about people blacking out westies I am all in for this.
I am pretty dead set on using the raptor 2-part system and spraying it on with a gun(I want black even though raptor can be tinted any color) My westy is white and I think the black looks killer.
I want to do the lower section plus a bedliner bra like heftysmurf did.
Anyone have thoughts if this is going to look bad on a white westy? I am having issues with the transition from the nose to the window pillar and should I do this before I reinstall my windshield?

Although I've got the gun with the Raptor kit, I did not use it. I just paint it on with a brush and then roll over with a USED paint roller. A new roller will leave too much hair on the surface. The finished texture is very acceptable. It is not as messy as spraying it on. The only draw back is the liner is not that thick. Whatever you choose to do, make sure you mask to the bottom of the " valley " on the side so it will not be that visible when your masking line is not straight. Hope you know what I mean. _________________ Steve

Read this from GoWesty if you havent already, and make note of how they masked the front fender flare and the door. They give a very good description. Its these little details that can make or break the look. When i did mine I mocked it up doth way s with tape and it definitly looks better thier way.

I saw the close up nose shot of the one Vanagon pictured, and saw the popping off Raptor.
This is the end result of poor surface preporation.
Sand the heck outa whatever your applying the bedliner to--don't be afraid to scratch the paint up good.
I'm ot talikng 220, or 320.
Hit it with minimum 180, a quick blast over with a DA and some 80 would be excellet for adhesion.
Don't be bashfull with the sanding if you want the bedliner to stick.
If the paint don't shine anymore, it's ready to cover with the bedliner. _________________ T.K. |

I planned on using 180 grit and sanding till dull then cleanup with wax remover...from a foot up on the whole van was sand blasted, POR15 then Epoxy primed...so its gunna be stinkin hard to sand.
I think I have myself talked in to doing the nose too....if I parked in the crappy seasons I woudnt do it but I drive all the time anywhere and rock chips then rust spots will piss me off after all this work. |

The raptor stuff works really well, but it takes a week or two to FULLY harden, so just go easy on it the first week or so. The hardest part about the project is deciding where to end your lines, and where to transition around corners, where to stop, etc. Go Westy shows how they do it, I did it slightly differently and everyone has their opinion, so just experiment with masking tape and see what works for you.
I'm not a huge fan of spraying the nose with bed liner but it is durable so if you have lots of rock chips, this may be the way to go. |

I love the (perceived, at least) durability that this would add to my vans, but wonder what it would take to remove this stuff to repair future body damage, etc. Has anybody tried to remove spray-on bedliner after it has dried? A quick search returns answers like freezing with liquid nitrogen, sandblasting, and that it can't be removed at all.
How different is the bedliner material from the thick stuff that OEMs put on lower panels?

I had my entire van covered in Line X. I like it alot...... never have to worry about scratches. It's a function over fashion thing..... but with fashion. It added some extra weight...... but with a new Tencent or GW Engine that should help with that _________________ "I may be schizophrenic, but at least I have each other"

Nice Line-X van! Now it's ding and scratch PROOF for life! (albeit a bit heavier...)
Line-X is well worth the $ (biased opinion from an ex-Line-X employee) |

Epoxy prime--forget the POR stuff.
The right way to do work with this stuff is apply whatever your going to lay on top of it while it's still wet.
I don't know how the epoxy is going to work with the wet POR miracle in a can.
It might make the epoxy as hard as a brick--I'd skip this move. _________________ T.K. |
