Last month, when I picked up my Westy from getting a repaint in Savanah Biege, the ol' body shop owner said to me, "You know I could have shot the lower side panels with Gravel Guard before we painted on the gold. Tough stuff, it would have looked like the sides of your Miata; not too conspicuous and pretty hard to chip, too." Maybe next time?

I am thinking of doing this to my syncro that has almost nothing but rock chips on the bottom portion (almost all the paint is gone!). There is not yet any surface rust but it will inevitably start so it makes sense to prevent it.

With that said, the body could use a paint job. However, I don't plan to do a paint job just yet. If i put the LineX treatment on the bottom portion is there any reason why that would make it harder to paint properly down the road?
I wouldn't be painting over it.

The only problem here would be getting a sharp masking line where the bedliner ends, or starts at the body line.

Lumpy don't make for good masking.

Looks Nice.

I know the black is readily available, but I for one would go with the Monochromatic / same color as the body look & tint the bedliner.
Blends in a little better with the whole thought----

Other than that -- it came out nice.

What product did you use?
Did you do it yourself?
What was your method of application?
Close up photos of texture please.

Thanks

Im with you on that TK, I could have tinted a batch to the sane color code as my paint, but I have a ton of bolt on stuff that is black including my plate bumpers and I think it flows alot better all matching....white plate bumpers would be gross.

x2 Very Happy
I'd like to see a close up of the line in the valley where you stopped. I'm in the process of sanding and can't decide where to cut it. Also can't quite decide on the front wheel/door jamb area.

Yes, the valley/where to stop issue is important and it'd be nice to see closeups.

I just got a Durabak color chip in the mail. Dark grey, looks like the color to go with on my white Syncro.

Is Durabak any good? I'm planning on sanding the lower panels down with 150 grit and wire brushing out the rust/crap in the seams first but with that, does this stuff hold on?

Look great up close and from a distance. Nice job.

When you masked off for sanding, how did you control sanding right to the edge without grinding through the masking? Did that masking stay in place and get a new strip over it before spraying the bed liner?

Has anyone used that green Frog masking for interior household painting? I wonder if that's a good masking tape to use rather than the typical blue. It's designed to expand and seal for a cleaner line.

I sanded right up over the masking tape, some areas I had to retape...I hand sanded the area leading up to the edge.

hopefully it doesn't pull back from the edge, Its fresh paint so I think i'm safe.

I wonder why you didn't run the tape with the body line--would have made it a little easier to follow.

In masking, I would have used 1/8th or 16th fine line first, then 3/4 taped over it with the masking paper attached to the tape off of the masking roll.

You can see if the tape is running straight pretty easy with the fine line tape first.

You did a great job the texture looks great that raptor product looks awesome . I've heard the prep is really important it's just so hard when you have a fresh paint job .
Thanks

I did follow A body line, yes thats how I tapped it.

Actually, I used duct tape and stole the neighbors sunday newspaper while filling my a/c with redtek without any manifold gauges and my a/c still doesn't blow cold.

I doubt it matters that much but when I did mine the paint guy told me that tinting bedliner affects the durability of the product. Black is toughest because it has no additives. Still, I bet the pigmented stuff is still plenty tough. I went with black cuz it happened to go well with my overall look.
