Found a great grill to take along, we have lots of little stoorage in these Westys, so getting just the right stuff is in the forefront.
This past weekend we found a great one. I will post pictures here this evening, but for now, leave it open for comments and suggestions. |

I'm thinking I'd like my grill stored up under the passenger side opposite the propane tank. Considering some sort of swing-down thing, like the spare tire clamshell. My current coleman is an inch wide for the frame rails though, I'll check out the stainless marine grills if I run further with the idea. I saw a rectangular gas one hanging off a sailboat this weekend that looked about right. |

X2. Fits up in the Westy luggage rack too (provided you rig a way to secure it). Mine goes into a cargo bag that I have up there. _________________ -James

I use this:
Folds up to about 18"x18" by 1" thick.
Has a griddle for pancakes if needed, and only uses 9 pieces of charcoal.

I have heard nothing but great things about the COBB Grill. spendy, but I have heard great things especially from vanagon owners regarding storage places. I am not sure wether I want charcoal or propane. I have several grills at my house and smokers, and I think for traveling I like the propane, easy to carry/clean. Already carry propane for the stove and if it's hooked to the van, you can just add an adapter.

We used one of these on our sailboat for years until finally going for the stainless one that mounts on the railings. Great design, only issue was making sure it was cool enough to pack up and making sure all burning material was extinguished long before transit. I did end up getting it and using it Westy camping in the 90's, but, soon gave up on it because its weight and size/spatial issues. I think some of the smaller propane ones are perfect for the Westy.
Here is a linky to the Stainless Marine one. I have seen someone in CO mount one to their rear/side for camping use _________________ Happiness=Portland, Oregon in the rearview mirror! |

Propane is definitely convenient and cleaner than charcoal but I still prefer cooking with charcoal. For years I carried a Weber portable gas grill in my Westy. I recently switched to this one that my wife found at a garage sale.
No marks or other info on it. BillW commented on another thread that he used to have one just like it. It works great and uses little charcoal. It certainly doesn't pack small or flat. But I just stuff it in a plastic garbage bag and set it in the space behind the back seat with all the other bulky stuff I travel with. _________________ 83 1/2 Westy waterboxer

Yup, I did have one of these for years, worked great, but bulky and takes too much space. Had one guy convicned I baked a pie in it. I was tenting and had a pickup at the time, so space not so much an issue. |

I don't like to carry bags of charcoal, so I use one of the older style Q BBQ's w/ propane canisters. It looks like a space ship when opened, but it then folds up and I can put it in a carry bag. It fits under the rear seat easily when not in use or ?
I will have to take a photo of it, as I cannot find the ones I thought I had.
Here you go! the Q BBQ won the Bronze Award in the 2003 Industrial Design Excellence Awards. I dig the light in the center also.

The marine grills are nice, when we had our sailboat I had a great one. Was gimaballed, and you could dop the coals overboard. I didn't. I would line with foil, let them burn to ash, then wrap up and dispose of with trash.
Still big. Althoough my new find is not a covered grill, it does work really great. |

I have one of the newer Weber Qs and it's fantastic. I've got a propane tap on my main tanks and a 10' hose. _________________ 1986 Vanagon Westfalia EJ25

Magmas are among my favorite grills.. and other than the rail mount, they are among the most versatile grills I've ever used.
Burley is building my passenger side swing away. It will include one 1" bar for mounting my Magma marine propane grill.
I have an older one.. Was not quite as pricey as the one linked. No piezo starter or hinged top. But it was $75 less. It may live back there on the rack if it stays put while driving.
The Magma propane models include stove rings.. so the kettle can also be used for heating tea pots, boiling water, etc.
Keep an eye out for fleamarket type sales at marinas.. Every once in awhile someone is selling one. The charcoal grills can be found used, pretty cheap. They are all stainless. So used is not "destroyed rusted out crap"
I have a Weber Q100 which is a GREAT BBQ grill.. Better grill than the Magma.. but it is a little bulky to carry on long trips. Very good for picnic trips, though.
Otherwise our Coleman stove does it all. Just no grilling. Have seen a grilled used over the top of standard Colemans.. I think it is an aftermarket design by another company. Grilled OK.
I'll look for the link on those. _________________ -89 GL Westy, SVX.. finally.

2nd vote for the COBB grill. Easy to use/store and you don't have to carry a bag if charcoal. Just 8 briquettes cooks anything you want _________________ 89 Bostig powered syncro westy |
