|
|
I'm wondering if anybody's tried fitting a late model 16 x 4 compact spare over their big brakes up front or in the clamshell?
It seems as though it could be a solution to the spare tire conundrum for those of us running 16" wheels. _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX

That's a great question. I'm still spareless since switching over to 16", and it makes me nervous. I'll bet the load rating would be off considerably _________________ Casey--

I did this with a steel Passat wheel. You can get them on ebay for less than $100. Just make sure it's the narrow one. Can't remember if it's 5.5" or 6" wide.
With a small spacer under the bolt securing the clamshell, everything fits great. |

The audi V8 has a 17 inch spare donut that has a 99 load rating. Fits the clam shell and fits even my big brakes.

Yeah, I don't think load rating would be an issue since C-sized Audis actually out-weigh Vanagons by quite a bit. However, I would be concerned that the center bore would be too small to fit over the Vanagon front spindle stub. Audis have a 57mm center bore while Vanagons require at least 63mm to get around the grease cap flange.

Center bore is easily machined at a wheel refinishing center-mine cost $40 for 4 steel wheels. Not sure how they will look at boring s space saver, though... _________________ '85 Westy Wolfsburg camper/2002 2.5 Subaru since 2003.

Mmm, I hadn't really considered the centre hole problem - darn!
I don't really care about the load rating - I don't think it will explode in a hundred mile drive. If its a little weak I'd be driving accordingly, eh? _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX

Great idea, using a narrow spare. Any progress?

That's why you put it on the front and the front on the rear.

Yeah - five minutes on the narrow shoulder of I-5 with 4 lanes of distracted drivers talking and texting past at 75 MPH - NO THANKS!!!
My matching spare cost me well under half the cost of that spendy spare, too. $100 plus $25.00 shipping isn't exactly a bargain. _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX

I don't have any experience with Audi or VW spares but I tried a 2005 M-B temporary spare. Fits and is lightweight. If you use on Syncros must have decoupler to prevent damage. REMEMBER TEMPORARY SPARES ARE TEMPORARY and use at slow speeds only.
Plenty of clearance for Audi Big Brake kit. The photos are on '87 Syncro.
No center hole problem. No machining required.
Fits Audi Big Brake kit and stock Syncro springs.
Easily fits stock clamshell carrier.
MB Spare size 155/70r x 17" Match 225/60x16 tire.

Many Mercedes have a 16 in full size spare thats fits easily over big brakes and has a big enough center bore already. A 205 55 16 is about the same diameter as a stock Vanagon 14 inch tire and fits perfectly in the clamshell. Often times if you find a wheel at a junkyard it already has a tire on it in that size cuz thats a super common size on a German car with 16 in wheels. |

Stock 185R14 diameter (25.75") equates to 225-55/16 (25.74") and will not fit in the standard clamshell. _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX
