While I'm still probably a couple years away from doing a Subaru swap into my '87 westy, I'm interested where people that have done the swap got their engines and how kms/miles on engine when swapped in. If anyone thinks an option needs to be added to the poll, let me know.

Maybe add JDM supplier to the list to distinguish from domestic engines.

Getting the entire running donor vehicle is optimal and most cost effective by far.
Pull what you need, sell the rest.

I've done about a dozen swaps and tried all the sources listed plus JDM, I had good luck when I score an early Subaru with decent miles, normally with a busted trany . But those are getting.g hard to find . Engine rebuilder is my second choice, my supplier is able to get me all the parts I need from the donor car.

I got my first one at an Ecology Center (pick your part) one day. In our urban area who needs another car hulk? It was less expensive than most damaged parts cars.

My next was via a classified ad. It was simple to get all the pre pulled parts. This was kind of a challenge but got me a later engine for bargin pricing. Guy really wanted it gone. Again, who needs useless parts in a garage in our urban setting?

My point is you gotta open your search horizons and grab a good deal when you can.

We have various engines on pallets in racks that require a fork lift to get at. This is sort of driven by a lack of space we live with down here in So Cal.

Every bodies set of circumstances is different.

Happy hunting.....

I got mine from John Lemley in Gaston, Oregon. He's very experienced with the Subaru swap crowd and makes sure you get what you need. And the price was fair.

Same here. John Lemley will do you right and know exactly what's needed for a Suby conversion. I paid $2,400 cash for an approx 60K 2001 Forester engine, ECU, wiring harness and a few other needed bits.

450 for a 2000 Subaru Legacy 2.5 saloon.

Stripped the car in two days and weighed in the shell.

Selling off the parts, I've made back the buying price so have an engine for my time... cheap Laughing
