This thing rocks! I used it today for the first time. Definitely made installing an engine easier, allowing one to finely adjust the height with just one hand, while under the bus checking alignment of transmission bolts. I also used it to install a transmission, and even to raise a bus on two wheels just as a regular shop jack would.
I found a thread about these things in the bay window forum (http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2981742#2981742), but no mention of it here so I thought I'd share.
In "locked" position.
Base released by two spring-loaded levers, very user-friendly.
Done!
Came with three adapters for early 36-40 hp, 1500-1600, and 1700-2000 aircooled engines. Nice to have in the shop.

The down falls of the Harbor Freight one is... The thing does not lock on to the case, the front wheels do not swivel, and the plate does not tilt.
Chris we got that for an anniversary gift to eachother way back and it was the best one yet. The only problem I have is I keep breaking the wheels. Do watch the ball on the crank wheel. I caught it just right and ripped a hole in my thumb. |

Plus height adjustment might not be as precise? And will it last as long? Hmmm...the dealer lift really feels like it will work for another 40 years.

I like the Harbor Freight lift.
Wait for it to go on sale, as it does every two months or so.
I plan to make a tilt plate to fit between the arms, I'm just using two by fours and wedges now, but works pretty good. _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS

That dealer lift is awesome.
I don't suppose it would be too difficult to fab something to lock to the engine on the China Freight lift. _________________ Copyright CJ Industries, Inc.

Yes, the dealer lift is awesome. I love mine, so do my good VW friends here
I paid $150 for it from the same old closed shop I bought my '64 from.
I have the 40-hp and later engine clamp and the TypeIV adaptor. I wish I had the 36hp one instead, I'd actually use it instead of the type4 one which i'll probably never use. _________________ All he needed was a wheel in his hand and four on the road.

Get lucky and stumble upon one. When I went to scope out the shop in Mississippi I bought the '64 from, it was in the shop itself with an engine on it. The owner showed me how it worked and I immediately asked "Is this for sale too?" He hesitated a bit, I could tell he didn't really want to get rid of it even though he'd closed shop a few years ago and said "for you, I guess it could be......$150" I didn't even haggle and said "SOLD!"
Best $150 I've ever spent for anything VW related. It cuts engine removal/installation time about in half for me. _________________ All he needed was a wheel in his hand and four on the road.

Same here, I got it from an ex-VW mechanic, who bought it from a dealership many years ago. Got other VW-specific tools as well, but this one has to be the most useful one. I am surprised I never see them in this site's classifieds.

Seriously. The day I get rid of mine will be the day I don't own a VW.
Hell, I'm really picky about who I'll even lend mine to. _________________ All he needed was a wheel in his hand and four on the road.

That's why the rest of us have to go to Sears/Harbor Freight/Kragen/PepBoys, whoever has the best deal on an ATV jack today. For engines, my ATV jack works much better than a normal floor jack, even with it's shortcomings. You learn to work with it's quirks. Yes, without a tilt, getting them out is easier than getting them back in, but not that bad. Works good on Type 4 engines too. $90 at Sears for Craftsman ... http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00950190000P? |

Your are correct John, mine is not going anywhere anytime soon. But I thought you would still see them for sale every now and then by someone getting out of the hobby, or not having use for it, etc. But I am not even sure of how many of these lifts were made (I imagine quite a lot, in order to supply all the dealerships), nor of their history. I assume they were made in the USA, not Germany. Mine doesn't have any IDs, but I recall a photo of one with an ID tag somewhere.

I know that the wheels on mine are stamped that they are made in the US. They all match and don't look to have been replaced. _________________ All he needed was a wheel in his hand and four on the road.

Sweet, another VW thing I can have scrappys look out for.
There is alot of VW stuff that doesn't look VW, and it makes its way to the scrap yard since the price of scrap went up so much.
That thing is boss, seriously. _________________ All your Buses are belong to us.

They were a "local manufacture" tool. There was a guy in upstate NY that had a bunch made. That is who I got mine from way back then. He does not have any more of them. The big problem is they do weigh a bit so shipping will not be cheap (but worth it). I do see them appear ones in awhile but they get snapped up quick. |
