I took the rear brake drums in to the FLAPS to have them turned. They didn't have specs for min/max diameter for my 1969 bus. Is that info online, or part of the collective knowledge?
Thanks! |

Rear brake drums are becoming difficult to find. I would not let a flaps touch mine.

That's a good question. I would do a visual to see if there is any obvious uneven wear. If not then use a micrometer or caliper to check for uneven wear. If not then use them as is. Or just use them as is and check for pulsing. If they don't feel good then take them to a machine shop or a brake shop. I would use Midas before a flaps. It is a matter of care and training. Flaps may just take off material until the job is finished. Midas might be a bit more careful with the job especially if they are told that the drum is almost irreplaceable. There are none in the classifieds.

Thanks for those recommendations. I don't have that much confidence in my local Midas store, but I do know a good VW shop. I'll pick up the drums tomorrow.... the FLAPS didn't have anyone to turn them until Monday, so they are untouched. |

There are VW people at my local Midas and they would understand the concern.

I wouldn't touch midas, but that is only because of my experience with teh local shop. maybe they aren't all run that way. Most drums have a Max diameter in the casting somewhere inside the drum, have you looked for this? _________________ [email protected]

For specs look in your service manual. If you're doing a brake job you need other info in the manual anyway.
Keep away from FLAPS. Go to a VW shop. Same with Midas and similar brake places, keep far away.
And actually with anything on your bus only go to VW shops and VW parts houses. But FLAPS and bling stores are still a good place to get oil and air fresheners. _________________ 71 Superbug

oops
they are available from several vendors, but
£187.96 net
Part ID 211-501-615/G/BQ
Stock level Special order item
Don't know if that is our part number. There are less expensive drums from other vendors and for other drum part numbers

I bought a pair from Vw heritage about two years ago. For my '78.
They are lighter than originals and I remember that the side wall was thinner. _________________ '79 Bay-window, 2.0, duals solexes, automatic

At least on a late bay it's different design, so the wheel wont fall off... _________________ '79 Bay-window, 2.0, duals solexes, automatic

Turning drums is way overated. Like mentioned, if they pulse they are out of round. But with minor grooves it's no problem. The shoes will match the minor grooves accordingly. Turning drums when it's not needed is not the good thing to do.
A periodic inspection of your brakes will tell you when you need new shoes. If you wait until it's metal to metal then you might need to turn or replace the drums. An inspection once in a while is a lot easier and cheaper. _________________ 71 Superbug

I'll be doing my rear break shoes this week when I get the parts. Saw no uneven wear on the old shoes, so i won't turn the drums. This is only the second set of shoes on these drums tho and hav'en had any issues. The Jerome campout is in a couple weeks. for a very very long time the max safe diameter is stamped / cast into the outside of the drum. It has been that way for about 50 years or more. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

I thought so too. Maybe with some healthy wire brushing I can uncover it.
Update on my project: I took the drums to a recommended shop first thing this morning to let them have a look. The guy agreed that we probably shouldn't turn them, that they were in good enough condition to just clean & scuff with some sandpaper. Hopefully we can finish up this project this evening before dark. |
