Posted my q in a couple other(oils) locations but no response. Anyone know anything about the titanium additive now in a couple oils?? Is it to replace the zink?? I'm at the crossroads of oil brands to use with our flat tapped engines. Not much said on the bottle. |

.. oil discussion is like a religion and you may have trouble believing this... if you are driving a Stock vehicle, all oils are backward compatible, no matter what changes they come up with..stay within the recommended oil weight for dino or use the lastest greatest diesel oils(more zinc)...mobil1 recommends 0/40 syn for the vanagon... |

I been using the latest greatest oil, Rotella, but zink has been removed to such a low level it may no longer help any. |

Not to change the subject but I am finding fewer and fewer heavy weight oils at the usual places. No Mobil 1 15-40 at Walmart, for example. |

I can get 5w40 Mobile 1 Turbo Diesel at many of my local FLAPS. The ZDDP is okay the last time I checked. Oils with first numbers of 15W or higher and second numbers of 40 or higher don't have to meet the GF-4, GF-5 low ZDDP requirements.

SM, SN oils are not backwardly compatible, that is why you see bottles of 5w20 or 10w30 that only say SM or SN, they don't meet the specs for earlier oils. They may pass the newer wear tests, but aren't being tested according to some of the older test.
Don't have a clue on titanium additives, that's a new one for me. |

The ?? I would ask is what kind of titanium?
In my world titanium has 2 functions...electronically deposited,
.... its a extremely hard, wear resistant surface. approx 600VPS
As an oxide in suspension its a very fine aggressive abrasive,
I use it for putting a really fine edge on hardened steel, or polishing saphire.
Its like the "Titanium " credit cards...I just don't get it |

Castrol synthetic is the one i'm looking at as an example, their top grade, has the titanium(new) additive. As to how it's added,?, curious as anyone what it's purpose is, all that is on bottle it to do with film strength and as i'm keeping Castrol synthetic in my westy ,po used it, so still a question if this an improvement. If u keep the oil film from breaking down then the no-zink won't be a problem |

The new Rotella engine oils are still very good for our flat tappet Vanagon engines. Who knows what level of titanium is good. Could just be a marketing hype..
The new Rotella..CJ4..still has a very high 1100/1200 see the link to Bob is the Oil Guy and a virgin oil analysis on the 5w40 1264ppm zinc with a nice slug of boron and moly too.
http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2330040#Post2330040
A sample of Rotella CJ4 15w40..1078ppm zinc..still very robust oil.
http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.ph...ost2354338
Most PCMO oils have 600/800ppm of zinc. Anything north of 1000 is fine for the VW older engines.
Unless you have a very highly loaded valve train..with racing valve springs..Rotella will work just fine. |
