Ok...it's dare to be different time again.
Brasilia? been there...
Country Buggy? done that...
Fridolin?, played out...
How about a custom Tatraplan?
1950, air cooled, 4 cylinder, flat four, rear engine, swing axle, wide 5 ... the similarities are far too numerous... the lawsuit between VW and Tatra back in the day certainly had some merit.
Ive seen em with VW engines before...but never customized.
Time for the first "Cal Look Tatra" me thinks! _________________ Cheers!

I think it will be a SLOW build thread, but I will update it whenever I do anything.
I will post some more photos of the car as it is next...show some of the similarities to the VW stuff...it is really interesting to see. _________________ Cheers!

Thanks for posting the tatraplan.co.uk web link...that's a great page, good illustrations and images of the engine and everything. And the original sales brochure stuff is dreamy!
Looks pretty similar eh? _________________ Cheers!

I just spoke with a guy in San Diego that has a Tatra that has a VW engine in it...he wants to go back to Tatra power, so we are thinking perhaps we can swap some bits to make it happen for both of us.
Stay tuned... _________________ Cheers!

So...what do you all think wheel wise?
17" Raders?
BRMs?
Empi 5 spokes?
Its a regular wide 5 pattern... _________________ Cheers!

Seems like a pretty sweet project. I saw what you needed in your post on Bring-A-Trailer after you purchased the car, and that included taillight lenses and bumpers. As far as taillight lenses go, since you're not going to be restoring it, (edit) 1950 Pontiac taillights, possibly with blue-dot lenses, may very well work. Seeing as though I've never seen a Tatra in person, I'm not sure of the Tatraplan taillight size, but I think they might work. The repro EMPI bumper bars from BFY Obsolete Parts would look good on this Tatra, but fabrication would be needed in order to install them. If you end up with second thoughts about the Cal-Look build on this and want to return it to original, PM me and I'll give you some information on Tatra parts and original equipment. But the idea of a Cal-Look Tatra is very appealing, so I doubt you'll have second thoughts. |
