our '72 Ghia developed a nock. so we're gonna swap a '74 motor. the Ghia motor has the generator and the '74 has an altornater. would it be better to keep the altornater that's with the '74 motor? what would be needed to do to change over to the altornater?
Thanks for the help!

Is the alternator a AL78 (external regulator) or a LA82 (internal regulator).
Either way you can't use the generator's regulator. _________________ Glenn

A AL78 alternator has a plug with 3 wires and a bolt terminal. A AL82 has a single wire and a bolt terminal. _________________ Glenn

so would it be better to keep the generator or swap to the altornater and i assume the number of regulater wires means the hooup would be different?
thanks! |

Generator is 30 amps and alternator is 55 amps.
Either will work. _________________ Glenn

I would go with the alternator as its already with the motor and its easy and cheap enough to address the voltage regulator issue. _________________ Ghia Owner Emeritus |

Another vote for the alternator here.
If you need to make a change to the wire harness,
it's an easy job for an internally regulated alternator.
That information is available @ many sites on the interweb.
If that '74 alternator is an original, it would've had it's own
external "solid state" regulator. That conversion to your '72
will be a little more involved. _________________ ****************************

Stick with the alternator. Upgrading to an alternator is a no-brainer. _________________ 1967 VW Beetle

this is the first car i've had with a generater and all seems fine so why would the altornater be better? not going to have any big electrical users added on.
thanks for the info! |

You need a regulator for a 74 AL78 alternator.
