This photo shows a Beetle driving on Canoga Ave in Woodland Hills, CA in 1964.
This beautiful street had pepper trees planted along it by Victor Girard in the 1920s as part of his planned town of "Girard."
You can see the tree-lined Canoga Ave at the upper right of this photograph from about 1924. The residential area included Topanga Canyon Blvd in the center of this view looking north, showing model homes built before the trees were planted in the neighborhoods south of Ventura Blvd:
My parents bought one of those homes on Canoga Ave in the early '50s, and lived there until shortly before I was born.
Girard's plan failed, and after WWII, in an attempt to erase his name and reputation, the City of Los Angeles (which encompasses the area) renamed the community "Woodland Hills" due to all the street trees he planted 25 years earlier, which had matured nicely. These can be seen in this 1940 view looking east:
Ventura Blvd runs top to bottom, and Canoga Ave (the area where the Bug photo was taken) is just above centerline left to right. The Ventura Freeway (US-101) would be located to the left (north) of Ventura Blvd in about 1960.
I remember as a kid being driven along heavily-crowned Canoga, frightened by the rising waters in the gutters when it really rained, which were several feet wide and deep in an era that preceded storm drains. They can be seen in the first photograph. But I loved those trees!
North of Ventura Blvd these pepper trees were removed by about 1970 as Canoga was widened to four lanes, so sad. At least south of the boulevard they were kept in the residential areas. |

A young Jake and Elwood?
I think I see JC Whitney or EMPI wheel rings and chrome rear light assemblies. |
