interesting decklid bulge on this uk car
Isn't that bulge for when the engine has a second generator for high-output purposes? The 2nd gen is mounted to the right of the original. Due to the forward curve of the engine lid when viewed looking straight down, there is not enough space on an unmodified lid for the gen pulley to clear; thus the bulge for clearance. European market 1967 year model. They got front disc brakes that year (which only came as four lug), and most didn't change over to the upright headlights until the following year.

that's a 58-63 decklid with small number plate light (not a pope's nose!! Rolling Eyes ) and the small tail lights were fitted until may 1961 so car can be dated as 58 - 61 and will also have semaphores.

Big Bill, here's a shot from a similar perspective so you can see the difference; from RareAir's gallery. What we in the USA call a pope's nose is the style made from approx. 1946 thru August 1952- the "pre-zwitter" split window generation. The bottom of the license plate housing is slanted upward because in addition to the light that shines downward for the lic. plate, it contains the lens for the centrally mounted single brake light which needs to be seen from behind. That style housing gives the impression of a person who "turns his nose up" on society.

This shot is from the Press Photo archives and has a much better detail-

-The Sept. '52 split windows (Zwitters) and all ovals' lic. plate light housing had a different shape whereby the light only served to illuminate the lic. plate. The bottom of the housing is now level with the road. The central stop lamp was relocated to each of the "snowflake" taillamps.
-The "oval era" lic. plate housing is very similar to the '58 thru 'early '64 style but has a very mild "peak" on it running along the center, going vertically. At first glance and not knowing about this peak, you can easily think that the styles are the same. That peak disappeared when the '58's came out.
-A few of my vintage VW-owning colleagues in Germany thought that the pope's nose applies to the oval and square-window era housings, and were surprised when I mentioned the differences to the split-era housings. I don't know if German enthusiasts here on theSamba who own pre-'52 Beetles refer to the oval era housings by a different name, and realize that a Pabstnase (German word for pope's nose) is truly only found on pre-Zwitter split windows.

this is pope pius xii (in office 1939 - 58 ) after whom it was likely named

as you can see it was a fitting nickname for the larger light...however it is becoming common for it to be misused for the oval type and I should just learn to let it go... Smile
